Summary of Position:

The purpose of this position is to perform technical code inspections for development projects; to interpret and enforce applicable plans and code requirements.

Salary Range*: Inspector 1: $54,210 - $86,735

  Inspector 2: $56,920 - $93,795

  Inspector 3: $63,277 - $104,388 

*Qualified inspectors may also qualify for additional stipends in accordance with the current Skills Based Pay Policy, up to $15,000. 


  • What you can expect to be doing (Essential Functions): 
    • Completes inspections; Travels to each jobsite and completes inspections based on building codes and enters into the system.
    • Ensures approved plans and permits are onsite; 
    • Maintains accurate and detailed inspection records, verifying construction and materials used meet Building Code standards or design; issues notices as required.
    • Identifies code violations and evaluates solutions for code compliance.
    • Reviews and organizes scheduled inspection routes for each day; contacts each customer and sets time window for arrival. 
    • Travels to each jobsite and completes inspections based on building codes and enters into the system. 
    • Responds to requests assisting with code questions and interpretations. 
    • Completes all other duties as assigned. 
  • Do you supervise or not? 
    This position may have limited responsibility for the direction or supervision of apprentices or other trainees.
    What are the physical demands? 
    The work is typically performed in a variety of work environments and requires the ability to traverse adverse terrain, work in heat, cold, and other weather conditions typically encountered in an outdoor environment. The employee uses equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
    Where and how do you work? 
    The work is performed in, a vehicle, outdoors, in residential and commercial construction, and on active construction sites, working in confined spaces.

    What do you need to know to do this job effectively?

  • Knowledge of:
    • Applicable federal and state laws, town ordinances, and department policies and procedures. 
    • Building and construction practices for a variety of public works projects. 
    • Civil engineering practices, including hydrology. 
    • The geography and street/road systems of the town. 
    • Local building codes. 
  • Ability to:
  • Ability to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and/or legal documents. 
  • Work extended hours for adverse weather and/or disaster response, assessments and recovery. 
  • Apply fundamental concepts of theories. 
  • Work with advanced mathematical operations methods and functions of real and complex variables. 
  • Write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, emails, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. 
  • Use web-based software systems.  
  • Use Microsoft Office Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, or similar tools.
  • Solve problems and make sound decisions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and customers.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Model behavior that is consistent with our values of RESPECT.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience

A combination of education and work experience in the field of construction that would determine the state certification level for inspections.

To be considered for Level 2 & 3 positions, a minimum or 4 years of field inspection experience is needed.

  • You may be randomly drug tested while on the job. 
  • You will be subject to the Safe Driving and Accident Policy
  • A valid and current NC Driver's license and the availability of private transportation to get to work is required.

Salary : $54,210 - $104,388
