The Outdoor Recreation Programs team is seeking energetic, creative, and top-quality individuals at least 18 years of age who are enthusiastic about working with elementary- aged children or teens to serve as a Summer Camp Lead.

The Camp Lead will play a vital role in the development and implementation of diverse indoor and outdoor recreation programs for Cary’s Outdoor Recreation Summer Camp. General responsibilities include planning, organizing, and supervising various outdoor recreation activities, ensuring the proper setup and closure of sites, and supervising participants.

Outdoor Recreation half-day camps run Monday-Friday, 8:30a-1:00p or 12:00p-4:30p. No weekend hours will be required. 

Potential camp locations include Bond Park, Godbold Park, Cary PASS sites, and other outdoor recreational focus areas.

This is a seasonal (June - August), non-benefited position, up to 40 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours.

Please Note: Anticipated Starting Rate for Camp Lead is $20.00/hr depending upon qualifications and staff position. 

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the camp.
  • Ensure strong communication with parents on schedule changes, concerns, and disciplinary issues.
  • Prepare, organize, and supervise facilitation of program activities, and develop and implement programs for diverse groups.
  • Assist with program development and adherence to standards, coordinating space and resources for developmentally appropriate activities.
  • Monitor and supervise various activities in multiple spaces simultaneously, providing behavior management and adjusting as needed to mitigate issues.
  • Ensure participants and patrons have exemplary customer service experience.
  • Ensure camp guidelines and policies are followed.
  • Mediate camper disciplinary issues and complete necessary paperwork, communicating with supervisor about any needs.
  • Ability to drive a town 15-passenger vehicle or smaller.
  • Conduct administrative tasks such as creating and drafting reports, staff schedules, maintaining supply inventory, entering attendance, and documenting and submitting incident and accident reports.
  • Perform other job-related tasks as required. 
  • General knowledge of principles, practices, and objectives of related programs.
  • General knowledge of behavior management strategies and techniques.
  • General knowledge of community awareness and dynamics.
  • General knowledge of basic office equipment.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to inspire and guide teams effectively.
  • Ability to remain organized, multitask, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to stay engaged, demonstrate, and lead active and passive activities.
  • Program planning skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and the public verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate recreational activities and events while maintaining close attention to detail.

Education and Experience

Must be at least 18 years of age. 

Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma/GED. 

Requires First Aid/CPR Certification, or the ability to obtain one with supplied training in the first six months.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess any of the following:

  • Some experience working in a camp setting or working with children in a group setting. 
  • Some experience either leading, teaching or mentoring children, teens, or adults. 

Physical Requirements 

Work in this class requires the ability to be physically active and to stand for long periods of time.   Work requires the employee to be able to work outdoors in challenging conditions, such as heat and humidity.   An employee must be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction.   An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted and move about freely.  Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal.

Conditions of Employment

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal history check, SBI finger-printing, motor vehicle records check, education verification and credit history review) and satisfactory reference checks prior to employment.

Requires possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Salary : $14 - $19
