Cary Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources is seeking a confident and experienced recreation professional to serve as the Program Assistant II- Boathouse Rentals at Bond Park.
This position assists the Outdoor Recreation Supervisor and Outdoor Recreation Programs Coordinator as the on-site authority for daily boathouse operations and rental services. The Boathouse provides canoe, kayak, paddleboat, and sailboat rentals to the public and plays a central role in seasonal programming and waterfront engagement.
The Program Assistant II- Boathouse Rentals is responsible for overseeing rental operations, directing boathouse staff, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards, and delivering high-quality visitor experience. This position acts with independent judgment during assigned shifts and provides operational continuity in the absence of full-time staff.
Work schedules include afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays, with extended hours during peak rental season.
This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.Typical Tasks
- Assists Outdoor Recreation Supervisor in daily operational management of Boathouse, Bond Park, and concession area.
- Oversees boat rentals and assists with directing Boathouse staff.
- Monitors weather and lake conditions, manages rental flow, and addresses operational issues as they arise.
- Provides operational support at other Outdoor Recreation sites, including Cary Action Sports, as needed.
- Performs administrative tasks including staff scheduling, preparing marketing materials, responding to public inquiries, and maintaining operational records.
- Assists with program and camp support including participant registration, enrollment tracking, and PRCR events such as Bands, Bites & Boats and the July 4th Fishing Tournament.
- Performs general office duties
- Supports daily point-of-sale operations (RecTrac), cash handling, reconciliation, and purchasing approved supplies in accordance with Town procedures.
- Performs other job-related tasks as required.

- Ability to complete assignments accurately and prior to the established deadline
- Ability to operate common office equipment
- General knowledge of boating safety practices and waterfront operations.
- General knowledge of rental-based recreation facility management.
- Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and the public verbally and in writing
- General knowledge of cash handling and POS systems.
- Ability to maintain and establish effective working relationships with others
- General knowledge of risk management in water-based recreation environments.
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to acquire knowledge of Cary’s policies, procedures, and the services of the department
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Education and Experience
Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED AND a minimum of 2 years of experience working in a park or outdoor setting.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Preference will be given to candidates who possess any of the following:
- Some experience in a waterfront or rental setting.
- Some experience supervising or leading staff.
Physical Requirements
This position will require the ability to move about on rough terrain, or work in outdoor environments in inclement weather. Employees must have the ability to lift or move heavy objects, such as supplies or equipment.
Conditions of Employment
Requires possession of a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
