The purpose of this class is to perform seasonal recreation assistant duties in an efficient and effective manner by observing department procedures, be prepared daily to provide courteous and professional customer service, and to perform duties as assigned. This class works under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor.
Note: In accordance with G.S. 160A-164.2(b)v, the selected candidate must complete a fingerprinting and SBI records check. The selected candidate may not begin work until results are received.
Work requires the frequent use of facility equipment, office computer, phones and other office equipment. The employee may be required to sit or stand for long periods of time with occasional bending or squatting. Employee should be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Work in this class will exert up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employee must have the visual acuity to perform frequent reading, to prepare and analyze data and figures, perform close-up work, and ability to distinguish color and depth vision. Employee must also be able to hear and talk with others, either in person or on the phone, to communicate information.
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in a temperature-controlled environment subject to typical office noise and environment as well as noise from recreational, exercise or other program facility use. This position also requires working outside in potentially extreme temperatures. Work may occur during evening hours or weekends. Work that brings employee in contact with bloodborne pathogens may subject the employee to compliance with OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Employee must use personal protective equipment as required.
Education
Completion of high school or GED equivalency, preferred.
Experience
Prior practical experience in recreation and sports programming, preferred.
Special Requirements

- Assist the Recreation Supervisor in successful implementation of the day camp programs.
- Participate in the planning and training phase of summer camp activities.
- Greet camp participants and parents in a positive and upbeat manner.
- Track activities and games that need to be introduced during summer camp.
- Provide campers and parents with information about camp schedule.
- Perform minor first aid.
- Consistently apply behavior management techniques to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all camp participants.
- Ensure that all work locations are clean, organized, and kept free of litter.
- Facilitate team activities and other recreation education experiences.
- Communicate with parents of camp participants to provide feedback about camp experience.
- Communicate regularly with the program supervisor to provide updates regarding programming, camp activities and any pertinent information regarding participants.
- Regularly and predictably attend work.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, game rules and methods for effective sport/athletic, leisure, and recreation programs.
- Knowledge of department operations, policies, processes, procedures, and services sufficient to respond to general inquiries from the public.
- Knowledge of common office practices and procedures.
- Skill in interpersonal communications to interact with customers, solve problems, and ensure conflict resolution.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, program participants and other employees.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures.
