Position Summary/Purpose:


To provide Emergency Medical Aid at the BLS Level, EMS Public Education duties, and maintain medical equipment, apparatus, and facilities. The Emergency Medical Technician responds to emergency calls to provide quality, efficient, and immediate care to critically ill and injured patients and transports them to an appropriate medical facility. This position must observe traffic ordinances and regulations concerning emergency vehicle operations.

•    Performs accurate emergency response duties and activities, including safely driving ambulances and other response vehicles


•    Performs pre-hospital emergency medical care according to established accurate medical protocols including but not limited to childbirth delivery, managing general medical complaints of altered mental and physical states, respiratory, cardiac, diabetic, allergic reactions, seizures, poisoning, behavioral emergencies, environmental emergencies, and psychological conditions. 


•    Must be able to perform both independently and as a member of a professional patient care team.


•    Under the direction of a Paramedic, assists with setting up advanced life support supplies and equipment.


•    Participates in drills and attends classes in emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.


•    Adheres to all department policies and procedures to ensure compliance and maintain operational standards.


•    Maintains familiarity and proficiency with assigned districts to ensure efficient response times.


•    Receives and relays calls and alarms. Operates radio and other communication equipment.


•    Participates in the EMS public education and injury prevention programs.


•    Cleans and decontaminates ambulances and equipment, performs inventory and stocks supplies. 


•    Maintains equipment, apparatus, and facilities. Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment. 


•    Performs general maintenance work to maintain facilities and EMS equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around the station; makes minor repairs; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains, and tests apparatus and equipment. 


•    Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, emergency medical aid, and injury prevention programs.


•    Presents programs to the community on safety, injury prevention, and related topics.


•    Maintains valid Emergency Medical Technician certification.


•    Reassures patients as appropriate and communicates with other emergency personnel on the scene and after as needed. 


•    Accurately completes all administrative reports as required to complete assignment. 


•    Must be able to lift and carry a stretcher weighing 125 pounds.

Must be able to work with as a team member and as a responsible EMT professional.


Supervision Received: 


Works under the immediate direction of the Deputy Chief, Captain, Paramedic and or EMS Director.

Minimum Required Qualifications


Education, Training, and Experience


1)    High School Diploma or GED equivalent, Copy of valid CT driver's license


2)    Valid National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Certification or valid State of CT Emergency Medical Technician Certification AND currently practicing in the area under YNHH Medical Control.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skill


Knowledge: Working knowledge of driver safety


Ability: Ability to learn the operation of ambulances and other emergency equipment; Ability to perform work related to emergency medical aid, hazardous materials, and prevention techniques. Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergencies, training, or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, and cold. Ability to act effectively in emergencies and stressful situations. 


Skill: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; emergency medical skills, emergency management skills, skilled in motivating and training

Work is performed primarily in offices, vehicles, and outdoor settings in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and night shifts.  Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations.  The individual is exposed to hearing alarms and hazards associated with rendering emergency medical assistance, including bloodborne and airborne pathogens.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk or hear, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and taste or smell.


The employee may frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 125 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
