GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under general direction of the Public Works Director, this position performs the operation and maintenance of the Water Treatment Plant. The employee may also perform a variety of general labor activities such as operation of a truck, mowing, general mechanical repairs, painting, etc. Work is generally routine and is accomplished in accordance with established policies, procedures, and practices. Work is performed independently with limited supervision and independent judgment must be used when accomplishing tasks most of the time.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The list of essential functions is intended to be representative of the tasks performed and does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.

  • Maintains and operates a water treatment plant; records readings from instruments; maintains records on plant operations; monitors levels and flows and makes appropriate adjustments.
  • Assists with the maintenance and repair of plant equipment.
  • Collects samples.
  • Handles chemicals and calculates correct dosage.
  • Performs general custodial and grounds maintenance work.
  • Performs related duties as needed or assigned.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of Tennessee with a clean driving record. Must be available to work night shift, evening shift, weekends, and occasional day shift. Grade II Water Treatment Operator certification required within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment and methods used in water treatment operations.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with water plant and related activities and of necessary safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of chemistry as applied to water treatment.
  • Ability to adjust water pumps, chemical feed machines and other water plant equipment.
  • Ability to check the operation of equipment and to detect defects in operation.
  • Ability to conduct bacteriological and chemical tests as required by state and federal regulation.
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports using MS Word and Excel.
  • Skill in the use and care of hand tools.
  • Ability to make arithmetic computations.
  • Ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The following is intended to provide a general sense of the work environment and physical demands that may be required of the position:

  • Sit at a desk and use hand, wrist and finger movements to operate a computer regularly.
  • Lift and carry supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to drive safely and independently.

Pay: From $24.00 per hour
