Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

This facilities maintenance and upkeep position is in the Town of Bel Air Department of Public Works and involves the performance of a full range of custodial duties in the Town Hall, as well as, various other Town facilities. This employee is supervised by the Facilities Manager.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

Performs the following cleaning functions daily or as needed in the Town Hall, Parks and Recreation Building, William A. Humbert Amphitheater, Rockfield Park Comfort Station, Parking Garage elevators and other facilities as assigned.

  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms and related fixtures.
  • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming.  
  • Gather and empty trash to outside trash containers.  
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.  
  • Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.  
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, or mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, or squeegees.  
  • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.  
  • Requisition supplies or equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.  
  • Dust furniture, walls, machines, or equipment.  
  • Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors.  
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures, including tables and chairs.
  • Steam clean or shampoo carpets.  
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, or supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, driveways, or parking areas, using snowplows, snow blowers, or snow shovels, or spread snow melting chemicals.  
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing tasks such as locking doors after operating hours or checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created.  
  • Mow or trim lawns or shrubbery, using mowers or hand or power trimmers, and clear debris from grounds.  
  • Set up, arrange, or remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, or scaffolding to prepare facilities for events, such as banquets or meetings.
  • Make adjustments or minor repairs to heating, cooling, ventilating, plumbing, or electrical systems.
  • Empty ash trays/urns.
  • Replenish paper towels, soap and other consumable supplies as needed.
  • Change light bulbs.
  • Clean and disinfect kitchen areas.
  • Pick up trash around the exterior of the Parking Garage and Rockfleld Park Comfort Station.
  • Determines what cleaning supplies, cleaning equipment and other consumables (i.e. soap, paper towels) are needed and advises the supervisor accordingly.
  • Performs other related custodial or maintenance duties as assigned.

 

WORK ACTIVITIES

  • Performing general physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.  
  • Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things.  
  • Inspecting areas, equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of problems or other errors or defects.  
  • Communicating information to supervisors, or co-workers by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.  
  • Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.  
  • Developing specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of safe lifting and the ability to lift 100 pounds.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the safe and proper use of basic hand tools and cleaning equipment.
  • Drive trucks or other vehicles to or at work sites.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Requires graduation from high school or equivalent GED.
  • Requires two (2) years of related work experience.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Requires possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to pass the Maryland Medical Examiner’s Certificate Requirements and obtain a DOT Physical Card.
  • Requires developing one's own ways of doing things, guiding oneself with little or no supervision, and depending on oneself to get things done.
