The Auburn Public Library is offering a unique, customized position for the right person to join our team as Deputy Director of the Auburn Public Library.
The position of Deputy Director was designed specifically to support an essential component of our succession plan strategy. The Deputy Director will be supported with significant mentoring, team-training, and growth opportunities, subsequently assuming the position of Library Director in Auburn, in one-two years.

QUALIFICATIONS
We are seeking the ideal candidate with a balance of hard and soft skills including but not limited to:
- The desire and ability to learn and grow within this position, with the intention of transitioning to the position of Library Director in Auburn within one-two years, assuming qualifications are met
- At least three years of recent and relevant full-time supervisory and other experiences in a public library, including working knowledge of Mass General Laws, Town Charters, and Unions
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively using verbal and non-verbal, written, technology-based, active listening, and visual communications, with all staff, management, and other stakeholders is critical
- Aptitude for dealing diplomatically, enthusiastically, and consistently with the public, incorporating an outstanding public service demeanor
- Ability to understand, follow and communicate detailed oral and written instructions is essential, as is the responsibility for adhering to the policies and procedures of the Library. Must be able to function in an often fast-paced environment and ‘switch gears’ often
- Must recognize and appreciate our high-functioning, highly collaborative team of professionals: Commit to leading, participating, and supporting the team within a shared-goals’ culture
- Experience and passion for working with children’s services including collection development and program design, support, and presentation, or the enthusiastic desire and ability to work towards those important competencies
- Must be able to hear and speak at normal levels, lift up to 40 pounds, and use technologies and other devices such as would be required in an office or public services environment.

- Must be highly dependable, consistent, and accountable, on various levels
- Exceptional writing skills
- Demonstrated strengths in management and leadership in public services
- Varied and broad-based experiences in a public library, with specialty skills in at least two areas of operations or governance, such as, but not specifically limited to: collection development and maintenance; programs; fiscal management / MUNIS experience; advanced knowledge with Evergreen and Aspen Discovery; technology skills; or related skill sets.
- Ability to work the hours needed to embrace the responsibilities of the Deputy Director, which will, at times, include day, evening, and Saturday hours, and to represent the Library Director in her absence
Auburn’s governance as structured by the Town Charter defines that the Library Director is a direct report to the Town Manager. The Library Director is a Division Head within the Department of Public Services and is a member of the Town Manager’s administrative and governance team.
The Library team works very collaboratively and productively with all Town departments, not only for standard supports but for team-based initiatives with Auburn Youth and Family Services, all Auburn Public Schools, the Board of Health, The Information Technology Department, the Department of Public Works, and others.
The annual salary is based on first-year strategic accomplishments, beginning at $82,000, with anticipated incremental increases through the first year, to an end of year one salary of $86,000. We are seeking only applicants who are interested in a long-term career position at the Auburn Public Library. This is a salaried 37.5 hour position. All employees’ schedules fluctuate depending upon the needs of the Library for program or other initiatives, and for summer and school vacation schedules when we welcome double the number of visitors. The Auburn Public Library does not adjust for Saturday closings during the summer; our hours are consistent throughout the year.
The preferred academic credentials are an MLIS or MLS and significant recent and relevant full-time experience in a public library. Candidates with a related Master’s degree, or a Bachelor’s degree with a balance of other competencies and experiences will be considered. A candidate without an MLIS will be expected to commit to MLIS degree completion within a time frame as determined by the Town Manager, Library Director, and the candidate.
