The Town of Acton is seeking an experienced Per Diem Health Inspector to perform environmental health inspections and enforcement activities on a part-time basis. This position is ideal for a seasoned professional looking for flexible, project-based work. Weekend availability is required, particularly for event-based inspections. This is a non-benefited, per diem position that will report to the Environmental Health Director within the Health Department.
General Duties and Responsibilities: Conduct inspections of food establishments, tobacco retailers, and sites handling hazardous materials to ensure compliance with local and state public health regulations. Perform weekend inspections for public events, festivals, or temporary food vendors. Complete detailed inspection reports, issue notices of violations when necessary, and follow up on corrective actions. Interpret and enforce public health codes, regulations, and bylaws. Respond to complaints or emergencies related to environmental health concerns. Communicate findings professionally to business owners, the public, and municipal staff. Maintain accurate records of inspections and enforcement activities. All other duties as required by the Director.
Minimum Entrance Requirements: Two (2) to three (3) years of experience as a Health Inspector with experience with food inspections. Serve Safe or comparable food safety training required. Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications: Massachusetts Registered Sanitarian (RS) or Certified Professional Food Safety (CFPS).
Special Requirements: Schedule will be assigned in two-week increments with flexibility depending on availability and inspection needs. Work is budgeted for approximately 400 hours per calendar year. Must be available for weekend inspections as required.
Pay Rate: $45/hour
