What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cemetery Worker position at Town of Acton, MA?
The Town of Acton is seeking a dependable, hardworking individual to join our Department of Public Works as a full-time Cemetery Worker. This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys working outdoors, operating equipment, and taking pride in maintaining spaces that are important to our community.
The Cemetery Worker performs skilled and manual work associated with the operation, maintenance, and care of Town cemeteries and grounds. Responsibilities include preparing and maintaining grave sites; mowing, trimming, landscaping, leaf removal, and seasonal cleanup; maintaining cemetery roads, walkways, buildings, and other property; and operating vehicles and equipment including backhoes, dump trucks, riding and walk-behind mowers, chainsaws, leaf blowers, and other power equipment.
The position also assists with snow and ice removal, storm response, and other Public Works operations as needed. Because Cemetery staff regularly interact with families, visitors, funeral service providers, and members of the public, the successful candidate must demonstrate professionalism, good judgment, and sensitivity while performing their work.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and at least one (1) year of experience in Public Works, cemetery operations, landscaping, grounds maintenance, equipment operation, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Valid driver’s license, Hoisting License 2B or greater and Massachusetts Pesticide Applicators License, or obtain within 6 months. OSHA-10, or able to obtain within first 6 months.
The position requires significant physical activity and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Candidates must also be available for seasonal work, overtime, emergency response, and snow and ice removal as required.
Pay: Grade A-3, starting at $27.7953/hour
