Summary
The Top Hand is a senior-level tower technician responsible for performing advanced climbing, rigging, installation, and maintenance work on wireless communication towers. Serving as the lead climber under the direction of the Tower Foreman, the Top Hand ensures that complex tower tasks are executed safely, efficiently, and to industry standards, while mentoring less experienced crew members.
Key Responsibilities
- Climb, rig, and work at elevated heights on telecom towers, monopoles, and rooftop structures.
- Install, maintain, and troubleshoot antennas, coax, fiber, mounts, and related hardware.
- Perform advanced rigging, hoisting, and load-handling operations following safety guidelines.
- Lead in-air work activities and coordinate with the ground crew for efficient task execution.
- Mentor and train new climbers and tower technicians on best practices and safety procedures.
- Conduct pre-climb and post-climb inspections of safety gear, rigging equipment, and work sites.
- Assist with the assembly, stacking, and modification of towers and structures.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, RF plans, and material lists.
- Complete all required documentation, including job safety analysis (JSA), daily reports, and closeout photos.
- Adhere to OSHA, NATE, and company safety protocols at all times.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of climbing and tower construction experience.
- Certifications:
- TTT1 (Required)
- Authorized Climber, Rigging & Rescuer Certification (Required)
- OSHA 10/30 Construction Safety (Required)
- RF Awareness (Preferred)
- Bloodborne (Preferred)
- Heat/Cold Stress (Preferred)
- First Aid/CPR (Preferred)
- HazCom (Preferred)
- Lockout/Tagout (Preferred)
- Strong knowledge of telecom construction practices, rigging techniques, and wireless equipment.
- Physically capable of lifting 50 lbs, climbing 300 ft, and working in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work at remote sites and travel extensively.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.
Work Environment
- Outdoor field work on towers, rooftops, and monopoles.
- Travel required, often to multiple states or remote areas.
- Exposure to heights, electrical hazards, weather elements, and heavy equipment noise.
