Total Health & Wellness is looking for an experienced, dependable individual to join our team as a Patient Insurance & Access Coordinator.
This position plays an important role in making sure our patients are properly prepared for their appointments and understand their insurance coverage and financial responsibility.
Responsibilities include:
- Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits prior to appointments
- Check for required prior authorizations and referrals
- Identify inactive, incorrect, or missing insurance coverage
- Add and update insurance information accurately in the EHR
- Contact patients when insurance information is missing or invalid
- Explain copays, deductibles, coinsurance, outstanding balances, and other patient responsibilities in a professional and easy-to-understand manner
- Help patients understand why insurance did or did not cover a service
- Direct patients to the appropriate billing or insurance resource when additional assistance is needed
- Contact insurance companies when necessary to resolve eligibility or coverage questions
- Assist patients with getting their insurance information corrected when possible
- Reschedule appointments when insurance requirements have not been met or coverage cannot be verified
- Communicate with providers, front-office staff, and the billing department regarding insurance or authorization issues
- Review upcoming schedules proactively so insurance problems are addressed before the patient arrives
- Document all insurance verification, authorization information, and patient communication accurately in the EHR
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous medical office, insurance verification, authorization, or medical billing experience
- Strong understanding of commercial insurance, Medicare and Medicaid
- Experience using payer portals such as Availity
- Strong computer and EHR skills — AdvancedMD experience is a plus
- Excellent communication and customer-service skills
- Ability to confidently explain insurance benefits and patient balances
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and follow issues through to completion
- Compassionate, professional, and nonjudgmental communication with patients
- Ability to work in a fast-paced medical environment
This is not simply a front-desk position. We are looking for someone who understands medical insurance and can identify and resolve coverage issues before they become billing problems.
