Position Summary
The Mohs Histology Technician performs specialized laboratory procedures related to the processing and preparation of tissue specimens for Mohs micrographic surgery and skin cancer diagnosis. This individual works closely with physicians, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel to ensure timely and accurate specimen processing while maintaining the highest quality standards.
In addition to laboratory responsibilities, this position may assist with surgical procedures, support providers in clinic, and travel locally to satellite locations as needed. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Histology & Laboratory Responsibilities
- Process tissue specimens, including cutting, staining, cover-slipping, and slide labeling.
- Assist with gross tissue preparation and frozen section processing.
- Prepare and process Mohs tissue specimens for physician evaluation.
- Prepare slides for microscopic examination and diagnosis.
- Maintain laboratory quality control standards and documentation.
- Monitor specimen processing to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Prepare and manage staining solutions and reagents.
- Maintain detailed records of Mohs and biopsy procedures.
- Count, sort, file, and maintain slides and specimen records.
- Maintain surgical and laboratory logs, reports, and documentation.
- Perform daily laboratory cleaning and equipment maintenance.
- Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory equipment including:
- Cryostat
- Microtome
- Automatic slide stainer
- Microscope
- Fume hood
- Order laboratory supplies and maintain inventory levels.
- Enter laboratory data and maintain electronic records.
Clinical & Surgical Support Responsibilities
- Assist with Mohs surgery preparation and procedures as needed.
- Prepare surgical rooms, instruments, and supplies.
- Assist providers with patient care activities and medical assistant duties in clinic.
- Support patient flow and provide exceptional patient service.
- Travel to satellite clinic locations as needed to support providers and patient care.
- Collaborate with physicians and team members to ensure efficient clinic operations.
Qualifications Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Preferred, but not required.
- Histology Technician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification.
- Experience in Mohs surgery, dermatology, pathology, or histology laboratory settings.
- Medical Assistant experience.
- Experience assisting in surgical procedures.
