We are seeking an experienced Accessibility / Section 508 Specialist to lead web accessibility compliance for a public-sector website redesign. This role requires deep knowledge of WCAG 2.1 AA standards, Section 508, and digital accessibility testing methodologies.
Role Overview
The Accessibility Specialist will collaborate with the UX/UI Designer, Front-End Developer, and Project Manager to ensure all design, content, and functionality meet accessibility standards. The specialist will audit digital components, provide remediation guidance, and certify final compliance prior to launch.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive accessibility audits for website layouts and components.
- Identify and document issues related to WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 compliance.
- Provide recommendations for remediation to developers and designers.
- Test final builds using accessibility tools (e.g., WAVE, axe, NVDA, JAWS, Lighthouse).
- Deliver a final accessibility report certifying compliance.
- Guide the team on best practices for accessible web content and PDFs.
- Participate in internal design and QA review sessions as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field preferred.
- 3–5 years of hands-on experience conducting accessibility audits for websites or applications.
- Strong understanding of WCAG 2.1 AA, Section 508, and ADA standards.
- Proficiency with accessibility testing tools (axe, WAVE, Siteimprove, JAWS/NVDA).
- Knowledge of HTML, ARIA, and common accessibility coding practices.
- Excellent written documentation and communication skills.
- CPACC, WAS, or Trusted Tester certification preferred but not required.
Contract Details
- Duration: Approximately 4–6 months.
- Hours: Flexible, averaging 10–20 hours per week depending on project phase.
- Work Environment: Fully remote with scheduled virtual meetings.
- Pay: $85 per hour (1099 independent contractor).
