Tax Accountant – Independent Contractor (Remote, Eastern Idaho Residents Only)

Location: Remote within Eastern Idaho | In-person training required
Engagement: 1099 independent contractor, minimum 30 hours/week
Compensation: $60,000 to $70,000 annually
About Us
Total Balance Tax & Consulting is a tax and advisory firm serving about 500 individual and business clients. We focus on tax compliance, tax planning, and advisory work for small businesses and their owners. We’re looking for an experienced tax professional who wants steady, substantive work with the flexibility of working remotely.
Location Requirement (Please Read Before Applying)
This is a remote role, but it is not open to applicants outside Eastern Idaho. You must currently live in Eastern Idaho (Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Rexburg, Blackfoot, or the surrounding area) and be able to attend in-person training and occasional meetings locally. Applications from outside this area will not be considered. You must be authorized to work in the United States.
What You’ll Do
- Prepare individual, partnership, S corporation, C corporation, and fiduciary returns
- Prepare multi-state returns and handle related research
- Respond to IRS and state notices
- Assist with tax planning projections and year-end planning
- Organize client source documents and identify missing information
- Communicate with clients about their returns as needed
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field
- 4–5 years of tax experience in a public accounting firm
- On the CPA track (meeting education requirements) or currently sitting for the CPA exam
- Strong working knowledge of individual and business tax returns
- Ability to work at least 30 hours per week
- Reliable high-speed internet and a private workspace
- Residence in Eastern Idaho and ability to attend in-person training
Preferred
- Active CPA license
- Master’s degree in accounting or taxation
- Experience with ProConnect, Karbon, and Auditfile
- Experience with S corporation and partnership tax planning and structures
