POSITION SUMMARY
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe environment across all TAP properties. This includes general janitorial services, floor maintenance, and routine cleaning tasks performed according to TAP and Head Start safety, environmental, and operational procedures. All work is aligned with TAP’s mission to “Mobilize Community Resources” in support of anti-poverty efforts.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
- Reports to: Supervisor of Maintenance
- Coordinates with: Custodial Team Members and Center Supervisor/Lead Teacher or designee
- Supervisory Responsibilities: None
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
General Cleaning Duties:
- Clean and disinfect restrooms, fixtures, mirrors, and water fountains & sinks
- Wipe down walls
- Mop floors (dust/wet), vacuum carpets, and shampoo carpet as needed
- Strip, wax, seal, and buff floors per schedule
- Clean classrooms, offices, common areas, and windows
- Empty and clean trash cans daily; change liners
- Remove cobwebs and dust from various surfaces
- Replenish paper supplies, soap, and cleaning products
- Perform light maintenance (e.g., bulb changes, tightening fixtures)
- Move furnishings to clean behind or beneath when necessary
Floor Care & Equipment Maintenance:
- Operate floor cleaning equipment such as buffers, burnishers, extractors, vacuums
- Maintain janitor closets and equipment in a clean, organized, and safe condition
- Clean and store mops, vacuums, and other tools properly after each use
- Keep cleaning chemicals secure and out of reach of children
Facility & Safety Compliance:
- Report maintenance issues and supply needs to the Supervisor of Maintenance
- Maintain supply of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Follow all TAP safety, environmental, and operational procedures
- Know locations of first aid supplies, MSDS information, and fire extinguishers
- Secure building entrances/exits during and after shift
- Remove snow, ice, and debris from entrances/walkways as needed
- Dispose of waste in accordance with TAP environmental procedures
- Perform other cleaning or maintenance tasks as assigned
- Completing daily/monthly/quarterly task list
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment
- Proficient in floor care: stripping, waxing, shampooing, and buffing
- Ability to work independently and follow oral and written instructions
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and proper safety practices
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Organized, detail-oriented, and committed to cleanliness and safety
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- High School diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred
- Minimum 2 years of janitorial or floor care experience required
- Experience with buffers, scrubbers, vacuums, and extractors preferred
- Familiarity with OSHA safety standards and procedures
- At TAP, we use the Whole Family Approach. Employees may be required to attend Whole Family training and complete related data entry as part of supporting this model.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must have a valid Virginia Operator’s license with a good driving record and reliable transportation must be able to drive between center on a daily basis.
- TAP participates in the Virginia DMV Driver Alert Program. Employees who operate a TAP vehicle or their personal vehicle to conduct TAP business may be subject to driver record monitoring through the Virginia DMV Driver Alert Program.
- Must pass drug screening. Some positions require positive complete background screening including: criminal, sex offender and child protective services.
- Physical activity of this position – climbing; ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like; balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing or sitting for long periods of time, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, use of fingers for – picking, pinching and typing; grasping, feeling, talking, hearing repetitive motion of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- Must be able to work in unsanitary conditions.
- Physical requirements of this position – medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently.
- Visual acuity requirements – must be able to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
- Conditions subject to in this position – both environmental conditions; activities occur inside and outside.
- Weekends as requested.
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
If position requires tools, TAP will purchase the needed tools. The employee using the tools will be responsible for the care/maintenance of the tools. If any tool(s) are damaged or malfunctions, the employee will return the tool(s) to the TAP office for replacement. If the tool(s) are lost, the employee using the tool(s) will be responsible for replacing any tool(s) lost at their own expense.
