Position Summary

The Baby Pig Tech is responsible for providing care and supporting the health and well-being of pigs in wean-to-market barns throughout the production cycle. This position works closely with Tosh Farms team members, caregivers, and contract growers to promote high standards of animal care, health, welfare, and productivity while maintaining company biosecurity, safety, and animal welfare standards.


Schedule

Typical week is Monday through Friday, 7am to 3pm. Subject to vary due to the nature of working with livestock and weather instances.


Essential Job Functions

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Evaluate farm readiness to receive pigs, including assessment of barn hygiene, sanitation, and environmental conditions.
  • Receive newly weaned pigs, count pigs as they are unloaded, and sort them into appropriate pens.
  • Observe and assess the health status of pigs and work with caregivers to provide treatment as necessary.
  • Sort pigs within the group into appropriate areas of the barn based on size, health status, or other production needs.
  • Evaluate the quality and fitness of pigs and perform euthanasia when pigs do not meet established quality, health, or animal welfare standards.
  • Positively influence the health and well-being of pigs by working with caregivers to maintain high standards of animal care.
  • Visit farms multiple times throughout the production cycle to monitor and support the health and well-being of pigs.
  • Maintain effective communication among members of the Swine Service team, caregivers, contract growers, and other company personnel.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to animal health, treatments, and production activities.
  • Follow all company biosecurity protocols and procedures.
  • Follow all company animal welfare policies and procedures.
  • Champion a strong safety culture and follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with team members while also performing assigned tasks independently.
  • Follow all company policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Bachelor's degree in an agriculture-related program preferred but not required.
  • Four years of experience working in the swine or livestock industry may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound decisions independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent record-keeping and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer applications.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This position is physically demanding and safety sensitive. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods throughout the work shift.
  • Frequently bend, squat, kneel, crouch, and reach.
  • Lift and carry materials, supplies, or equipment weighing up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Safely navigate barns, gates, uneven terrain, wet or slippery surfaces, and confined work areas.
  • Work in close proximity to live animals and perform routine animal handling activities.
  • Maintain awareness while working around livestock, equipment, and moving machinery.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including coveralls, gloves, boots, eye protection, hearing protection, and respiratory protection when required.
  • Comply with company biosecurity procedures, including showering, clothing changes, and other sanitation protocols.
  • Work in environments that may be dusty, humid, hot, cold, noisy, or have livestock-related odors.
  • Maintain visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to observe animal health, identify hazards, and safely perform assigned tasks.
  • Hear and communicate effectively, with or without reasonable accommodation, to receive instructions, communicate with coworkers and caregivers, and respond to safety alerts.
  • Operate a company vehicle or personal vehicle for business-related travel as required, while maintaining a safe and responsible driving record.
  • Work overtime or extended hours as needed to meet operational requirements.
