Position Summary
The Service Center Manager oversees all operations of a pump service center, including repair, maintenance, testing, and reconditioning of industrial, commercial, and/or municipal pumping equipment. This role ensures operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and team performance while maintaining safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Operations Management
- Manage day-to-day service center operations including workflow, scheduling, and capacity planning.
- Oversee the repair, overhaul, field service, and reconditioning of centrifugal, submersible, positive displacement, and other pump types.
- Ensure timely turnaround on all service orders while maintaining quality standards.
- Maintain shop equipment, tooling, and measurement equipment in proper working condition
Technical Oversight
- Review and approve repair assessments, scope of work, and failure analysis reports.
- Ensure technicians follow manufacturer specifications, industry standards (API, ANSI/HI), and best practices.
- Support complex diagnostics and troubleshooting as needed.
- Oversee dynamic balancing, precision alignment, and hydraulic performance testing.
Team Leadership
- Recruit, train, and develop a team of pump technicians, machinists, and support staff.
- Conduct performance reviews and foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate with field service teams on in-situ repairs and start-up support.
Customer & Sales Support
- Serve as the primary point of contact for service customers, managing expectations and resolving issues.
- Prepare and present repair quotes, work scope recommendations, and post-repair reports.
- Identify upselling opportunities (upgrades, spare parts programs, service agreements).
- Build long-term relationships with key accounts in industries such as energy, water/wastewater, oil & gas, and industrial.
Financial Management
- Manage service center P&L, including labor efficiency, parts margins, and overhead.
- Control inventory of common wear parts, seals, and bearings.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce a strong safety culture in compliance with OSHA and company standards.
- Ensure proper handling of hazardous materials and adherence to environmental regulations.
- Maintain required certifications and documentation.
Qualifications
Required
- 5 years of experience in pump service, repair, or related rotating equipment field.
- 2 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Strong understanding of pump types, components, and failure modes.
- Proficiency with ERP/work order management systems.
- Excellent communication and customer-facing skills.
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Familiarity with industry standards: HI, API 610/682, ANSI.
- Experience with seal systems, bearings, and precision machining.
- Knowledge of variable frequency drives (VFDs) and motor basics.
- Manufacturer certifications (e.g., Goulds, Flowserve, Grundfos, Xylem).
Work Environment
- Shop/service center environment; may require occasional field visits.
- Exposure to industrial equipment, noise, and fluids.
- May require on-call availability for emergency service situations.
