Director of Nursing (DON) – Substance Use Disorder Facility

Position Overview
The Director of Nursing (DON) provides clinical leadership and oversight of all nursing operations within a licensed Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment facility. This role ensures safe, compliant, and high-quality nursing care in accordance with New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) and Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) regulations.
The DON works collaboratively with medical providers, clinical leadership, and administrative teams to support patient safety, regulatory compliance, and treatment excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clinical leadership and supervision for nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, and support personnel)
- Ensure delivery of evidence-based nursing care for substance use disorder treatment, including withdrawal management and medication administration
- Oversee nursing admissions, assessments, monitoring, documentation, and patient safety practices
- Maintain compliance with all applicable NJDOH, DMHAS, and state licensure regulations
- Develop, implement, and maintain nursing policies and procedures in alignment with regulatory standards
- Prepare for and lead state surveys, audits, and inspections
- Monitor clinical quality indicators, incidents, and trends; implement corrective action plans as needed
- Provide onboarding, education, and ongoing competency training for nursing staff
- Collaborate with Medical Directors, Providers, Therapists, Case Management, and Administration to support interdisciplinary care planning
Required Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of New Jersey (required)
- Nursing leadership experience required (DON, ADON, Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse, or similar)
- Experience in substance use disorder treatment, detoxification, or behavioral health strongly preferred
- Knowledge of withdrawal management, medication administration, and patient safety standards
- Familiarity with New Jersey SUD licensure and regulatory requirements
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems
Education
- RN license required
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred but not required
- Advanced degree or addiction nursing certification (CARN) preferred, not required

Pay: $105,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
