Position Overview
The Tooling Engineer is responsible for leading tooling projects from initial order through final production release. This role partners closely with Engineering, Quality, and Operations to design, develop, and implement foundry tooling that meets customer specifications and delivers strong first-pass yield performance. The ideal candidate combines strong CAD expertise, foundry process knowledge, and hands-on problem-solving ability.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, engineer, and maintain foundry tooling including patterns, core boxes, fixtures, and gauges using customer-provided models and specifications
- Apply advanced GD&T principles to ensure dimensional accuracy and manufacturability
- Develop detailed CAD models and drawings for new tooling programs using SolidWorks or equivalent software
- Simulate and support sampling activities to validate tooling performance and production readiness
- Maintain accurate documentation and update customer web portals to ensure seamless data communication
- Coordinate with external tooling suppliers by managing quotes, timelines, project milestones, and tooling inspections
- Design and generate CNC fixture drawings to support machining operations across multiple production cells
- Interpret complex customer blueprints and technical documentation
- Assist with dimensional validation and layout using CMM and 3D scanning equipment
- Provide hands-on support during foundry trials and production ramp-ups
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Skills
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar CAD platforms
- Advanced understanding of GD&T and blueprint reading
- Working knowledge of green sand molding processes and basic ductile iron metallurgy
- Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs
- Comfortable working in high-temperature environments
- Flexible schedule to support production and sampling needs
- Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills
- Ability to meet deadlines and perform effectively under pressure
- Professional attitude with strong teamwork capabilities
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
- Foundry Experience a Plus.
- Working knowledge of APQP and PPAP for automotive desired.
- Minimum 2 years of experience with CNC machining or related field.
