Description Reports To: Building Administrator

Supervises: Daycare Lead Teachers and Assistant Teachers for the childcare program.

Position Summary: Coordinate the daycare program serving the 2-3 year old students to ensure that all KDHE program requirements are met as outlined in the state licensing requirements. Teach full-time in the 2-3 year old classroom.

Minimum Qualifications: A qualified candidate will meet one of the following requirements for childcare program directors as stated in KAR 28-4-429:

  • Facilities licensed for more than 24 children shall have a program director who meets the training requirements by one of the following options:

Option 1: (A) Twelve semester hours of academic study or equivalent training in child development, early childhood education, curriculum resources, nutrition, child guidance, parent education, supervised practicum, and administration of early childhood programs; and (B) six months' teaching experience in licensed centers or preschools;

Option 2: A child development associate credential and one year of teaching experience in licensed centers or preschools, or supervised practicum in licensed centers or preschools;

Option 3: (A) An associate of arts degree or a two-year certificate in child development; and (B) one year of teaching experience in licensed centers or preschools, or a supervised practicum in licensed centers or preschools

Option 4: (A) An A.B. or B.S. degree in child development or early childhood education, including a supervised practicum; and (B) three months' teaching experience in licensed centers or preschools; or

Option 5: (A) An A.B. or B.S. degree in a related academic discipline, and 12 hours of academic study or equivalent training in child development, early childhood education, curriculum resources, nutrition, child guidance, parent education, supervised practicum, and administration of early childhood programs; and (B) six months teaching experience in licensed centers or preschools.

  • Requirements are subject to change based on Kansas Department of Health and Environment regulations and current exemptions.

Knowledge/Ability/Skill:

  • Knowledge of Kansas Department of Health and Environment regulations regarding daycare centers and ability to implement those requirements without supervision.
  • Knowledge of staff requirements and ability to train staff to meet those requirements.
  • Ability to supervise the work of staff assigned to the program.
  • Ability to lead a daycare classroom of up to 14 students.
  • Detail-oriented and able to complete required reports and paperwork within the required timeframe.
  • Ability to keep files organized and complete to meet the Kansas Department of Health and Environment regulations.
  • Knowledge of program budgeting.
  • Knowledge of purchasing requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to students, staff and families.
  • Knowledge of child development and parent education practices.

Physical Requirements:

Squatting, Kneeling, Speaking, Hearing, Visual, Walking/Mobility, Consistency of temperament, Ability to work with a variety of people at the same time, Stamina for working in stress producing environments, ability to lift up to 30 lbs. occasionally.

Position Responsibilities:

Ensure students are preschool ready the day they turn three in order to transition to a preschool classroom in Topeka Public Schools.

Ensure instructional practices align with district initiatives such as intentional academic workstations and Visible Learning.

Intentionally collect data and progress monitor skills to guide lesson planning and instruction.

Maintain program licensure as a licensed childcare facility and ensure all program requirements are met and consistently followed as outlined in KDHE licensing manual.

Ensure that daycare staff are compliant with licensing regulations and completing required annual training. Ensure daycare students/volunteers are compliant with licensing regulations and completing required trainings.

Assure compliance with KDHE, USD 501 and daycare program policies and procedures. Take appropriate action to correct any obvious or unsafe or non-compliant conditions.

Maintain current para job description, interview and evaluate para staff in toddler classrooms.

Interview, supervise and assign responsibilities to community volunteers in the toddler classrooms.

Complete all paperwork associated with staff, children, and volunteer files. This includes but is not limited to: Health forms, TB assessment, training documentation, attendance and hours in daycare, releases, and immunization records in accordance with KDHE requirements.

Provide supervision as needed to para staff to discuss program referrals, child development and behavior issues, and problem solve and assure program compliance.

Ensure ratios are maintained in each classroom as required from KDHE.

Oversee daily daycare program activities in child classrooms which include check in procedures, attendance, medication dispensing, field trip logs, daily behavior reports of children, daily lesson plans, fire and tornado drills.

Inventory new supplies and equipment as received and as requested by office staff.

Responsible for purchase of supplies used in the program and ensuring that all physical needs of classrooms are being met.

Provide program enrollment materials to parents and responsible for all aspects of child enrollment in program which includes accepting and assignment of classroom.

Complete any other tasks deemed necessary by the principal.

Oversee and ensure smooth operations of all daily daycare program activities.

Provide direct care, instruction and toddler classroom responsibilities.

Assist classroom staff in evaluating and assessing toddler development using assessment inventory or other developmental checklists as needed.

Provide training to daycare staff on orientation, SIDS, behavioral interventions, child abuse and neglect, communication, and child development, and ensure all staff have opportunities for attending training offered in the community in order to meet licensing requirements.

Facilitate and participate in Shaner Early Learning Academy staff meetings and trainings.

Provide staff/student updates and areas of concern to Principal.

Help parents and families identify student support system and need for community resources which may be beneficial. (Parents as Teachers, WIC, etc.)

Partner with community agencies to support student and family needs.

Assure concerns between staff are dealt with appropriately and promptly.

This is a grant-funded, 8 hour/day, 10.5 month classified position.
