Role Overview
The System Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and security of the organization’s IT infrastructure. This role manages Windows and macOS environments, supports end users, and ensures systems remain reliable, secure, and up to date. The ideal candidate is a methodical problem-solver who communicates clearly across technical and non-technical teams.
Responsibilities
Systems Administration
- Install, configure, and maintain Windows Server operating systems, Active Directory, Group Policy, and Microsoft Intune.
- Integrate macOS workstations with Windows Server and Active Directory environments.
- Set up and manage user accounts, workstations, and access controls.
- Monitor system performance and capacity; resolve issues proactively.
- Plan and execute system upgrades, patches, and new software releases.
Network & Security
- Maintain LAN/WAN networks and network file systems.
- Enforce security through access controls, firewalls, backups, and regular security testing.
- Monitor systems for security threats and respond to incidents promptly.
Support & Collaboration
- Provide technical support to employees and site-managed technical staff for hardware, software, and connectivity issues.
- Troubleshoot and resolve outages, escalating complex issues as needed.
- Advise on current and prospective system changes by conferring regularly with IT managers, analysts, other system administrators, and end users.
- Direct and guide technicians diagnosing and correcting system failures.
Documentation & Training
- Build and maintain an internal IT wiki covering technical documentation, system specifications, policies, and procedures.
- Develop and deliver training materials to help staff use new technologies effectively.
- Write clear system documentation, reports, and correspondence as required.
Qualifications
Required
- 5 years of experience administering Microsoft Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, Group Policy, Intune, and TCP/IP networking.
- Hands-on experience with LAN/WAN networks, patch management, and database administration.
- Solid understanding of system security principles, including intrusion detection and data backup/recovery.
- Ability to write scripts in Python, PowerShell, Perl, or a comparable language.
- Familiarity with multiple operating systems and platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Ability to build effective working relationships with end users and IT staff.
Preferred
- Experience deploying and managing high-availability Windows Server environments in high-speed networks.
- Experience integrating macOS workstations with Windows Server infrastructure.
- Familiarity with multi-homed servers, including Dell hardware.
Working Conditions
This role is primarily performed in an office environment. The position requires the ability to sit for extended periods, operate standard office equipment, and communicate clearly in person and by telephone.
