What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Engineer position at Toolkit?
Toolkit Engineer – Environmental Compliance Software
Location: Phoenix, AZ (Strong Preference) | Hybrid/Remote (U.S.)
About Us
Toolkit is a rapidly growing environmental compliance SaaS platform built by environmental lawyers and engineers who were tired of clunky, manual compliance work. We build tools that help industrial facilities automate environmental reporting, streamline permitting, and stay on top of complex regulatory requirements.
We’re scaling quickly and looking for a Toolkit Engineer who can blend environmental expertise, product implementation, and (for exceptional candidates) permitting and business development.
Position: Toolkit Engineer
Type: Part-time or Full-time
Location: Phoenix, AZ strongly preferred (hybrid). Remote considered for exceptional candidates.
Compensation: $110,000–$150,000 annual salary, commensurate with experience and qualifications, plus bonus and equity opportunities
Travel: Yes
Start: Immediate (will review qualified resumes as received)
What You’ll Do
Product & Client Implementation
- Configure and implement Toolkit software for industrial clients.
- Translate environmental regulations into automated logic, workflows, calculators, and decision trees.
- Review SDSs, process flows, waste streams, and permit conditions to build accurate compliance tools.
- Support onboarding, training, and ongoing client use of the platform.
Data, Modeling & Compliance Logic
- Build and maintain calculations and logic for TRI reporting and related applicability determinations.
- Develop and refine compliance workflows for hazardous waste, air, and water programs.
- Help design and improve templates, checklists, and automated decision support within Toolkit.
Business Development & Outreach (Exceptional Candidates)
Our focus will be on candidates wired for both technical work and growth/sales:
- Help develop and draft air, water, and waste permits and plans (e.g., air permits, stormwater/NPDES plans, SPCC, FRP, SWPPP, waste management plans, TRI documentation).
- Represent Toolkit at trade shows, conferences, and industry events—including travel for booth duty, demos, and networking.
- Leverage your existing network and contacts (or build one quickly) to identify facilities and companies that would benefit from Toolkit.
- Deliver live demos of Toolkit to prospective clients and support follow-up conversations with a dynamic, confident presence.
What We’re Looking For
Core Requirements (Non-Negotiable)
- Background in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.
- Hands-on TRI experience (e.g., preparing, reviewing, or managing Form R/Form A, emission/threshold calculations, applicability evaluations).
- Strong technical comfort with spreadsheets, logic trees, data-heavy work, and software tools.
- Excellent written communication and documentation skills.
Additional Experience That’s a Plus
- Practical experience with one or more of the following:
- Hazardous waste (RCRA), universal waste, or industrial waste programs
- Air permitting (NSR/PSD/Title V or state analogs)
- Water programs (stormwater, NPDES, SPCC, SWPPP, FRP)
- Direct experience developing and drafting environmental permits, plans, or reports.
- Prior exposure to software implementation, SaaS platforms, automation tools, or scripting.
Traits of an Exceptional Candidate
- Dynamic personality with a genuine zest for sales and client interaction.
- Willingness and ability to travel for trade shows and client demos.
- Access to industry contacts, or a credible plan to develop them, to get Toolkit in front of potential users.
- Comfortable presenting, doing live demos, and representing the brand.
Personal Traits
- Curious, self-directed, and comfortable owning projects.
- Enjoys solving messy, real-world compliance and engineering problems.
- Energized by both deep technical work and talking to people.
- Interested in long-term growth, ownership, and helping shape a product.
Why Phoenix?
We will consider strong remote candidates, but being in Phoenix area is a big plus:
- In-person whiteboard and product sessions
- Closer collaboration with leadership
- Faster feedback cycles on features and client work
- More opportunities to join live demos and meetings
Why Join Toolkit?
- You’re helping build the product and the business, not just filling a role.
- Work at the intersection of environmental law, engineering, and software.
- High visibility: your work shows up directly in client tools and demos.
- Clear opportunity for equity if we’re a mutual long-term fit.
- Flexible schedule, hybrid work, and a small, creative team.
