**Annual starting salary of $87,602 will be effective as October 1, 2025**
**Additional compensation may be considered depending on experience.**

Under direction, prepares and prosecutes cases in court and performs related legal functions.

This is the first level in the Attorney classification series. Incumbents in these positions are assigned more routine/less complex work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs new case intake and screening, including determining type of indictment, gathering evidence, conferring with witnesses, visiting crime scenes, preparing subpoenas, petitions, and search warrants, and conferring with law enforcement officials.

Conducts legal research using a variety of references and resources.

Prepares for and attends arraignments, pretrial hearings, probable cause hearings, revocation hearings, jury selection, and other proceedings.

Negotiates pleas with defense attorneys and counsels defendants regarding plea options and outcomes.

Prepares and litigates civil and criminal cases; makes non-trial court appearances.

Advises law enforcement officers and County elected and appointed officials on various legal issues.

Responds to inquiries from the public regarding legal matters.

Writes appellate briefs and may argue appeals.

Files for protective orders, as needed.

May assist with grant preparation and reporting.

Attends meetings and training sessions; performs other duties, as assigned.

Reviews contracts, memorandums of understanding, Freedom of Information requests, and other civil related issues for County Departments and Elected Officials.

Conducts legal research using a variety of references and resources.

Advises law enforcement officers and County elected and appointed officials on various legal issues.

Responds to inquiries from the public regarding legal matters.

May assist with grant preparation and reporting.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and precedents; knowledge of legal procedures and the methods and practices of pleading cases.

Ability to understand and interpret statutes, constitutional provisions, and administrative regulations; ability to effectively prepare and litigate cases in court; ability to work effectively with members of the legal profession, law enforcement personnel, co-workers and county department representatives, and the public.

Skill in oral/written communication and interpersonal relations.

Physical Requirements and Work Setting:

Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioned environment; prolonged periods of sitting and periodic walking, standing, bending, and reaching; occasional lifting up to 15 lbs; visual acuity, hearing ability, and manual dexterity required.

Education and/or Experience Required: Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited school of law.

Certificates and Licenses: License to practice law in the State of Texas.
