FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Job Status: Part-Time, average of 15 hours weekly

SUMMARY
The Outreach Assistant, as part of the Learning & Interpretation department, assists the Teaching Artist in working with youth and intergenerational groups in off-site outreach experiences and on-site art making, with a focus on the community within the 2-mile radius of TMA. The Outreach Assistant helps with set up and tear down duties for art experiences provided by the Teaching Artist, including taking attendance, prepping materials, assisting the students, and classroom cleanup.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Supports the educational art program experiences of students by assisting with group and individual art projects both on site at the Museum and off site at community partner locations.
  • Helps with set up duties, such as assisting the Teaching Artist with preparing materials as needed and prepping the classroom space to ensure the space is clean and tidy and that there is adequate seating.
  • Greets the students, takes student attendance, and assists the Teaching Artist in getting the students seated and prepared for the art experiences. Supports the Teaching Artist as they oversee/manage the classroom and provide the art activity.
  • Helps to monitor supplies during class, assists Teaching Artist by retrieving any additional supplies or materials needed throughout the class time.
  • Assists the Teaching Artist when taking students into the galleries, help to monitor student behavior to ensure safety in the galleries.
  • Helps students organize their work to be taken home with them when applicable.
  • After the students have left, assists the Teaching Artist with storing materials and classroom cleanup.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.
RELATIONSHIPS
  • Reports to the Community Outreach Manager
  • Works closely with Teaching Artists, Art Instructors, Studio Programs Supervisor, and other Learning & Interpretation staff
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 2 years' experience in education or customer service required.
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to travel to locations off-site to assist in delivering art making experiences.
  • Ability to work as a team player who can adapt to meet shifting demands and priorities.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office is a plus.
  • A passion for the arts and education is strongly preferred.
  • Strong observation skills, including attentiveness to changing environment.
  • Deep interest in and experience with engaging and interacting with diverse students.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Standard classroom environment requiring regular use of art and educational production equipment. Sound level will vary from quiet to noisy, depending on activity level. Requires mobility and lifting ability sufficient to greet and welcome visitors, assist with hands-on activities, move about classroom spaces and store/replenish art equipment and supplies. May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions when moving among buildings and during outdoor events.
