Job Status: Part-Time, Casual, average 5 hours weekly
Commitment: At least 10 concerts per season; open availability on weekends
Hourly Compensation: $15.00

SUMMARY
The Toledo Museum of Art Head Usher is an integral part of the Peristyle Theater. Head Ushers team up with our TMA Volunteer Ushers to provide and facilitate a smooth, safe, and enjoyable experience for our guests. The Peristyle performance hall, inspired by ancient Greece, was built by the museum in 1933, and its stage has been graced by thousands of performers in the years since, including many performances by the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. Head Ushers make these events possible by leading our team of Volunteer Ushers with engaging visitors, distributing programs, taking tickets, guiding, and seating guests, and more. A special perk for Ushers is that they get paid to enjoy the exceptional performances by a wide variety of talent while they work!

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Positively engages with visitors of the Peristyle with exceptional customer service
  • Designates assignments for Volunteer Ushers
  • Motivates the Usher team to provide a welcoming experience for visitors
  • Communicates and collaborates with fellow Head Ushers during events
  • Proactively identifies, troubleshoots, and de-escalates issues occurring in the Peristyle
  • Writes condition reports at the end of every event
  • Operates and troubleshoots ticket scanners
  • Makes sure aisles are cleared and maintained during and after performances
  • Assists latecomers into the Peristyle
  • Opens house doors during intermission
  • Knowledge of safe and orderly evacuation in the event of an emergency
  • Performs other duties as needed.
RELATIONSHIPS
  • Ultimately reports to the Protective Services Supervisor, but works independently
  • Works closely with other Head Ushers, Volunteer Ushers, Protective Services, Toledo Symphony Orchestra staff, other TMA staff, and Peristyle visitors
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required
  • 1 year of experience in an usher role preferred or similar work experience in theaters, sporting events, concerts, etc., preferred
  • Supervisory or leadership experience preferred
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES, AND ABILITIES
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to facilitate positive dialogues with diverse audiences
  • Strong observation and awareness abilities, including noticing unusual circumstances and situations requiring attention
  • Ability to handle large crowds (sometimes up to 1,700 people)
  • Comfortable working closely with a devoted team
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude
  • Willingness to adapt and learn new things
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays
DRESS CODE
  • All Head Ushers are provided a jacket with the Museum logo
  • Appropriate, business casual attire
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Historical concert hall, with exposure to loud music, and large crowds. Events that are held across campus and may occasionally result in exposure to uncomfortable weather conditions. While performing the duties of a Head Usher, the employee is regularly required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand or walk for up to 4 hours during a shift. There are chairs to rest. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move boxes up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
