What are the responsibilities and job description for the Substitute Maintenance Team Member 2025-26 position at Toledo Maintenance & Grounds?
OBJECTIVE:
The purpose of the maintenance team is to ensure that we retain the public’s trust by keeping our facilities safe, clean and well maintained at all times.
CANDIDATES:
Toledo School District maintenance team members should be detail oriented and take pride in their work. They must be physically able to perform labor intensive tasks, and can self-start to get tasks/assignments done daily.
FUNTIONS/TYPICAL WORK:
The maintenance team performs tasks in the custodial, grounds keeping and maintenance fields. All substitutes may be assigned to a position in one of those areas, and will perform those tasks associated with the assigned position. The basic functions of each position are as noted below:
ALL:
Perform skilled duties to ensure the care, upkeep and beautification of all Toledo School District properties.
CUSTODIAN:
- Clean and maintain floors, walls, windows and carpets
- Clean and sanitize restrooms/shower rooms and fixtures
- Empty trash containers; set up and move furniture required for special events
- Use power equipment and hand tools such as broom, mop, squeegee, buffer, polisher and vacuum required for the cleaning and custodial maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture
- Use ladder when required in work assignments
- Replace light bulbs, tissue and restroom supplies
- Lock and unlock buildings; secure building when facilities are not in use by checking for unlocked doors and windows. Report any unauthorized occupants
- Manually or with self- propelled equipment, remove snow or debris from sidewalks, stairs, driveways, entry ways
- May operate motorized equipment
- Perform other duties as assigned
GROUNDS KEEPER:
- Operate and maintain mowers, tractors, vehicles, weed eaters, and other equipment. Perform basic related mechanic tasks
- Collect and dispose of leaves, debris, and refuse
- Install and repair irrigation systems. Move pipes, hoses, and sprinklers for the best use of available water
- Install and repair drain lines and catch basins
- Install and repair fencing
- Patch and repair blacktop and concrete work
- Maintain lawns, plants, shrubs, and trees by pruning and the proper and appropriate use of fertilization and pest control substances
- Assist in preparing plans and cost estimates for district development of turf and planted areas
- Make recommendations regarding the purchase of trees, shrubs and flowers
- Line/mark athletic fields
- May direct the work of students and other non-classified personnel
- Perform other duties as assigned
MAINTENANCE HELP AND/OR SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS:
- Substitute for building custodians when needed
- Clean and maintain floors, walls, windows and carpets

- Assist Maintenance Supervisor as needed with various tasks including but not limited to basic carpentry, plumbing, painting, furniture repairs and assembly, and basic electrical work

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- Physical strength sufficient to lift and carry 50 or more pounds frequently, and 80 pounds occasionally, with assistance; push and/or pull a variety of tools and equipment weighing 80 or more pounds with assistance, and to move heavy items with wheeled manual aids.
- Physical, mental, and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position
- Physical agility to sit, stand, kneel, walk, push/pull, crawl, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, and to reach overhead.
- Physical stamina sufficient to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time
- Sustain medium to heavy physical effort for up to 8 hours a day

QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in grounds care and maintenance, including some experience in skilled or specialized duties working independently
- Experience in custodial work and assignments
- Physical ability to perform heavy inside and/or outside work in all types of weather
- Physical ability to perform custodial tasks
- Knowledge and ability to perform mechanical maintenance and repair
- Must be able to read, understand and implement information in an MSDS/SDS sheet
- Possess a valid Washington Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
- Possess a High School Diploma or the equivalent
STATE/DISTRICT MANDATED REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid First Aid/CPR/AED card or ability to attain one
- Fingerprinting (paid by employee)
- Proof of Immunization (if born 1-1-57 or later)
- I-9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigration Reform Act
- HIV/HBV Training (district provided)
- Sexual Harassment Training (district provided)
