Position Summary

Under limited supervision, accomplishes the program objectives by planning, organizing, and supervising all functions required to operate and maintain recreation center facilities, activities, and services. Ensures that viable recreation program services are provided effectively and efficiently to meet the needs of the Tohono O'odham Nation.

The work is normally reviewed upon completion to ensure compliance with general organization/ department goals, policies and procedures. Major work activities are covered by procedures or guidelines permitting flexibility in selecting methods to utilize and procedures to follow, determination of work priorities, and the planning and coordination of projects.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes and supervises recreational programs and activities in order to meet the community needs and interests.
  • Establishes, implements, and communicates goals, objectives, policies and procedures in accordance with program guidelines and services.
  • Improves staff effectiveness by coaching, counseling, training and recommending disciplinary action for employees; planning, delegating, monitoring, and appraising job tasks and results in a timely manner.
  • Supervises building and grounds personnel with assistance provided by the Facility Maintenance Manager.
  • Hosts regular staff meetings to ensure communication among personnel and program-related activities.
  • Prepares and submits monthly, quarterly and annual reports as required according to established time frames.
  • Organizes teams in a variety of sports for O'odham members.
  • Responds to public inquiries and provides information concerning recreation programs, policies and procedures; handles all problems and concerns.
  • Supervises the issuance, usage and maintenance of recreation supplies and equipment; notifies manager of any loss or damage of equipment and/or items needing to be replace.
  • Requisitions, stores, and accounts for equipment and/or items needing to be replaced.
  • Conducts annual program evaluation and assessments of program components and staff according to established policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Provides for use of Nation vehicles in conformance with applicable policies.
  • Ensures compliance with all safety and security policies and procedures by staff and program participants.
  • Ensures program awareness by preparing brochures, advertisements, flyers, and other informational materials; attends meetings, training sessions, craft fairs, and/or community events.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; reviews professional publications; establishes networks; participates in professional societies; confers with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
  • Coordinates scheduling and facility usage by other Nation programs.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of the economic, educational, health and social problems of Native Americans.
  • Knowledge of arts, crafts, sports and recreation activities suitable for O'odham youth.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of center-based recreational program delivery.
  • Knowledge of basic First Aid and CPR.
  • Knowledge of department organization, functions, objectives, policies and procedures.
  • Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Ability to interpret applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Ability to be innovative, creative, and flexible.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
  • Ability to travel within the interior/exterior boundaries of the Tohono O'odham Nation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Recreation Management, Sports Science or related field and four years' work experience coordinating recreational programs, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • One year supervisory experience.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements

  • Must obtain certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid within the first six months of hire.
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and National FBI check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
