Diesel Powered Equipment Associate Instructor

The Tennessee College of Applied Technology – Elizabethton is seeking a knowledgeable, experienced, and student-focused Diesel-Powered Equipment Technology Associate Instructor to provide instruction and deliver high-quality training in a hands-on, open-enrollment technical education environment. The Instructor is responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering instruction that prepares students for employment in the diesel and heavy equipment industry.

 

The successful candidate will provide instruction in the diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of diesel-powered equipment and related systems while creating an engaging learning environment for students with varying levels of experience and technical ability. Because the college operates with an open-enrollment philosophy, the instructor must be committed to meeting students where they are and helping them develop the technical, employability, and problem-solving skills necessary for success.

 

In addition to instructional responsibilities, the Instructor will assist with program planning and improvement, maintain industry relationships, support student recruitment and retention, and help ensure the program remains aligned with current industry standards and workforce needs.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Diploma, certificate, associate degree, or higher in Diesel Technology, Diesel Powered Equipment Technology, Heavy Equipment Technology, Automotive/Diesel Technology, or a closely related field and/or a combination of education, training, and directly related industry experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of diesel engines and related mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, electronic, and computerized systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage a classroom and maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Ability to support diverse learners and work effectively as part of a team.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or higher in Diesel Powered Equipment Technology or a closely related field.
  • Previous instructional or teaching assistant experience in a technical education setting.
  • Current or previous ASE or other relevant industry certifications.

 

General Duties: 

  • Instruct with classroom and lab activities for Diesel programs.
  • Prepare, maintain, and organize tools, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Oversee students during lab exercises and provide guidance on safe and effective practices.
  • Monitor lab safety and ensure compliance with industry standards and program protocols.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to maintain an engaging and supportive learning environment.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and classroom documentation as required.
  • Communicate effectively with program leadership and staff.

 

Salary:  $56,263-$67,517/Commensurate with Tennessee College of Applied Technology salary guidelines.

 

Working Conditions:

  • This is a full-time position, scheduled Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., totaling 37.5 hours per week.
  • Instructional hours are expected during Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Regular use of a computer is required for communication, documentation, and instructional preparation.
  • Duties require normal periods of standing, sitting, and walking throughout the day.
  • Must be physically able to lift up to 50 pounds, and stoop, stand, bend, and perform hands-on demonstrations and work-based projects, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Requires operating a motor vehicle to travel within the college service area and to other locations as needed for instructional or professional purposes.
