ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  •  Works on a day-to-day basis with the Chief Medical Officer and other Service and Section Chiefs, fully participating in top medical management discussions and policymaking.
  • Formulates plans, policies, procedures and programs related to the departments under the Medical Division with the Chief Medical Officer and medical staff members. Plans and programs will meet the changing needs of patients and the hospital. Participates in decisions which affect the ability of the hospital to provide adequate patient care contributing to the life and well-being of patients.
  • Serves as a voting member of the Medical Executive Committee (MEC) which provides recommendations to the Chief Medical Officer relative to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and other certifying and regulatory organizations such as infection control and quality of care issues related to family practice services.
  • Assumes responsibility for the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QA/PI) programs of the family practice services. These programs are coordinated with the hospital wide PI programs overseen by the Division of Quality Services. Ensures that the family medicine department is in full compliance with (CMS), Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) and hospital standards.
  • Exercises overall supervisory responsibility, including planning, organization, integration and evaluation of family practice services in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Formulates and implements an overall program plan for the family practice service which will satisfy the requirements and priorities of hospital objectives and various accrediting agencies.
  • Determines the staff and other resources necessary and make appropriate and necessary adjustments within the service and subordinate sections.
  • Ensures timely establishment and approves work schedules for the primary care clinic and inpatient services, Continuing Medical Education (CME) leave and time attendance.
  • Collaborates with other Department Chiefs or supervisors to negotiate, determine and coordinate healthy working relationships.
  • Advises the Chief Medical Officer on problems or issues existing within the service or between services and recommends appropriate corrective actions.
  • Conducts or attends monthly service meetings or meetings to explain work requirements, methods, procedures and needs.
  • Gives instructions on special or difficult activities and discusses work assignments.
  • Provides written instructions and procedures for non-routine or complex assignments or new or changed programs.
  • Reviews, approves, modifies or rejects changes in functions, procedures, personnel assignments and other matters proposed by subordinates. Reviews and analyzes records and reports in order to evaluate work performance.
  • Makes decisions on problems not covered by precedents, protocols, or established policies.
  • Reviews the program, including inpatient and clinic cases in order to monitor quality and quantity of services. Initiates actions or recommendations for necessary changes for improvement.
  • Instructs, supervises and evaluates, directly or through subordinates, interns, residents and students rotating through the service.
  • Serves as the coordinator of the in-service and continuing medical education programs for the department.
  • Supervises the activities of the family medicine services. These activities may be clinical, administrative, and supportive in nature.
  • Assumes responsibility for family medicine service planning, positions management, career development plans, performance appraisals, awards, disciplinary actions; and, adhering to the essential functions stated in this Position Description and other performance standards based on established policies.
  • Estimates, justifies, or recommends to higher management, the resources needed to accomplish the program plans. Responsible for assuring that the supervised Sections and Services meet the CMS standards for quality of care and accreditation.
  • Assumes responsibility for the primary and secondary care of patients.
  • Interviews and examines patients, including complete history and physical examinations when indicated. Orders, performs, reviews and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests and studies.
  • Diagnoses a wide variety of illnesses and conditions. Prescribes a wide variety of therapies and interventions based on information obtained and professional medical judgments.
  • Arranges for specialized care or transfer of patients requiring a higher level of care, or care not readily available.
  • Performs various procedures approved by the MEC through the credentialing process.
  • Conducts outpatient clinics for patients with a wide variety of medical conditions. Initiates, reviews and modifies medications and therapies as indicated.
  • Maintains appropriate medical records and documentation of interviews, examinations, therapies, interventions and follow up plans.
  • Provides various consultation and instruction in care, within the scope of practice, to providers in the service, in other services and in other hospitals.
  • Assumes responsibility for the primary care of a wide variety of family medicinal patients, both inpatient and outpatient, as scheduled in the Ambulatory inpatient schedule.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 

  • Two (2) years’ experience in any of the following areas: Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine and Family Medicine as a Staff Physician and
  • Two (2) years’ experience in a supervisory role.

Education:

  • Completion of an accredited Medical School Program as a Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic (DO).
  • Completion of an accredited Residency Program in any of the following areas:
    • Family Medicine Residency Program
    • Emergency Medicine Residency Program
    • Internal Medicine Residency Program
  • Board Eligible or Board Certificated in any of the following areas:
    • American Board of Family Medicine
    • American Board of Internal Medicine
    • American Board of Emergency Medicine

Licensure:

    • Active, unrestricted Medical License from any U.S. State or Territory.
    • Current, valid, unrestricted Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) License.
    • Valid American Heart Association (AHA) Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain certification.
