Job Description
Full-time, exempt, in-person position.
This position reports to the Executive Director. Supervises Community Organizers (2-6 staff).
PVO is seeking a Community Organizer as our new Director of Organizing (DOA). This role will be responsible for the strategic direction of PVO’s campaigns and organizing initiatives. They will work closely with PVO organizing staff and parent leaders by coordinating organizing campaigns to expand affordable child care and pursue justice for families and caregivers in Oakland, Alameda County, and throughout the State of California in collaboration with our Statewide network. The DOA will design and implement leadership development opportunities for families.
Requirements
RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership Development
Develop strategic campaign plans with the goals, strategies, and tactics necessary to carry out the plan.
Collaborate with the management to create professional development plans for PVO organizing staff.
Work with PVO organizers to develop leadership skills of PVO’s base of parents in base building efforts through community outreach, community presentations, meeting facilitation, phone banking, 1:1 recruitment.
Manage and ensure leadership development tracking using administrative systems and 1:1 leader development and check-ins.
Staff Management and Supervision
Supervise and support PVO Community Organizers in recruiting parents and providers as participants in PVO campaigns, mobilizations, workshops, and community forums/events.
Set goals, effectively track metrics to create strategies to support PVO Community Organizers’ ability to reach turnout goals to meetings, events, actions, and parent workshops.
Carry out employee reviews and create work plans for PVO Community Organizers.
Create and administer trainings to further develop the skills of PVO Community Organizers
May include training and managing field organizing staff during campaigns
Recruitment & Outreach
The Director of Organizing will have a key role in developing an intensive recruitment and outreach program including: conceptualizing structure, analysis of target geographies, assessment of community assets, managing organizer accountability, and developing a dynamic governance structure for parent leaders.
Effectively establish relationships with parents at child care centers, in-home family child care providers, and other early education spaces.
Outreach to parents in Oakland and targeted areas of Alameda County.
Manage accurate contact lists, databases, and charts.
Coordinate with the graphic designer and communications team to create training materials, flyers, talking points, and other materials for campaigns.
Train Community Organizers to prepare parents to share their stories publicly.
Civic Engagement and Movement Building:
Strategize ways to outreach to parents and voters about policies and campaigns related to parents, kids, and early childhood education.
Take part in advancing PVO priority issues through the county and state budget process including turnout to county and statewide budget hearings.
Train and manage PVO Community Organizers in building relationships with community and political allies to support campaigns, our members, and organizational goals.
Develop strategic campaign plans with the goals, strategies, and tactics necessary to carry out the plan.
Lead efforts to build coalitions and committees that support the mission of the organization.
Participate in a variety of strategic coalitions and committees.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
Must live in and be very familiar with Alameda County (beyond Oakland)
Ability to work varied hours including nights, weekends.
Organizing experience or relevant experience in grassroots community organizing and supporting grassroots leadership development.
Experience building, organizing, and maintaining committees in multi-racial workplaces or communities.
Significant campaign leadership, organizing and base building, and coalition building experience.
Demonstrated ability to recruit effectively and retain individuals who identify as members of an organized group.
Experience developing talking points, preparing parent leaders for media and administrative interviews, and the strategic use of social media.
Demonstrated success and comfort facilitating community meetings and group discussions.
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a demanding environment.
Ability and desire to work well and connect with people of diverse ages and backgrounds, including those who have experienced various forms of trauma.
Passion for child care, early education, young children, and families.
Relevant experience working with coalitions.
Strong understanding of coalition dynamics.
Ability to represent the interests of PVO and its members in an external group setting.
Valid California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record and regular access to your own transportation.
Must be able and willing to travel occasionally, primarily in state and occasionally to other states.
Proficiency with PC operating systems, Google Docs, Canva, Keynote, and MS Office Suite (especially Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
Frequently required to lift, push, pull up to 30 pounds; daily work will include sitting, standing, and walking for prolonged periods of time
Preferred
Bi-lingual/multilingual preferred.
4-year college degree or relevant experience.
Policy advocacy experience.
Lived-experience as a member of a community PVO champions highly valued.

Salary : $82,000
