This role involves the underground installation of fiber optic cables using both heavy equipment (vibratory plows) and manual methods. The technician is responsible for preparing job sites, safely operating machinery, and restoring the work area to its original condition. The ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and to follow detailed construction plans is essential. Key responsibilities
- Site preparation:
- Review and interpret engineering work orders, blueprints, and utility maps.
- Conduct pre-job site inspections to identify potential underground utilities, such as gas, water, or electric lines.
- Mark the designated route and coordinate with other utility companies to prevent damage.
- Cable installation:
- Operate specialized equipment, including vibratory plows, trenchers, and mini-excavators, to create pathways for the conduit and cable.
- Place fiber optic cables and conduit within the trenches.
- Perform manual labor, including hand-digging ("potholing") around existing utilities to verify depth and location.
- Utilize hand tools, including specialized spades (whimper/womper tools) for precision burial in confined or sensitive areas.
- Site restoration:
- Perform backfilling of trenches and compact the soil.
- Complete site restoration tasks, which may include landscaping, and ensure the work area is clean upon completion.
- Safety and quality control:
- Adhere to all company safety policies, OSHA standards, and other local and federal regulations.
- Use connection testing meters to check for signal integrity.
- Create "as-built" diagrams and complete all daily paperwork accurately.
- Equipment and maintenance:
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance on all tools and equipment.
- Load and unload equipment from trucks.
Required skills and qualifications
- Experience: Prior field experience with underground utility construction, preferably with fiber optic cable.
- Technical knowledge: Ability to read and interpret construction documents, engineering prints, and splicing plans.
- Heavy equipment operation: Proven experience and competence in operating cable plows, excavators, and trenchers.
- Licensing: A valid driver's license is required
- Physical abilities: Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions, lift heavy equipment, and perform physical labor.
- Work ethic: Must be reliable, a self-starter, and able to work well in a team environment.
