This position is responsible for welding and fabricating piping systems aboard ships, submarines, and marine vessels during repair, and modernization projects. Marine Pipe Welders perform precision welding on a variety of pipe systems while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and workmanship.
Responsibilities include:
- Read and interpret blueprints, piping drawings, welding procedures, and technical specifications.
- Perform SMAW (Stick), GTAW (TIG), and FCAW welding processes on carbon steel, stainless steel, copper nickel, and other marine piping materials.
- Weld pipe systems used for fuel, hydraulic, steam, seawater, potable water, and other shipboard applications.
- Prepare pipe joints by cutting, beveling, fitting, cleaning, and aligning materials for welding.
- Perform welds in various positions, including horizontal, vertical, overhead, and confined-space applications.
- Ensure welds meet applicable quality standards, NAVSEA requirements, and customer specifications.
- Operate grinders, cutting torches, hand tools, and power tools safely and effectively.
- Perform visual inspections of completed welds and assist with testing procedures as required.
- Work aboard vessels, in dry docks, machine shops, and industrial shipyard environments.
- Follow all safety procedures, including hot work permits, fire prevention requirements, lockout/tagout, and PPE regulations.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Collaborate with pipefitters, shipfitters, supervisors, inspectors, and other trades to complete projects safely and efficiently.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of marine, industrial, or pipe welding experience preferred.
- Experience with SMAW (Stick) and GTAW (TIG) welding processes required.
- Ability to read and interpret piping drawings, blueprints, welding symbols, and technical specifications.
- Must be able to pass applicable pipe welding tests and certifications as required by the client.
- Experience welding carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper nickel pipe systems are preferred.
- Experience in ship repair, shipbuilding, or NAVSEA environments preferred.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and adherence to procedures.
- Excellent attendance, reliability, and work ethic.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain access to all area shipyards and naval bases (DBIDS clearance required).
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull.
- Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and access confined spaces.
- Capable of standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, and welding in difficult positions for extended periods.
- Must be able to wear required PPE, including but not limited to welding hood, respirator, hard hat, gloves, hearing protection, and fall protection equipment.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and industrial environments.
- Must be physically capable of working in tight spaces and aboard active vessels.
Work Schedule & Hours:
- Full-time position averaging 48–56 hours per week, including some weekends.
- Overtime and extended hours may be required to meet project schedules and deadlines.
