Job Description

• Maintain a clear view of and immediate access to all areas exposed to hot work.

• Communicate effectively with employees performing welding, cutting, grinding, and other hot work activities.

• Monitor work areas for sparks, smoke, and potential fire hazards.

• Stop work when necessary to prevent unsafe conditions and help restore a safe work environment.

• Remain in the hot work area for at least 30 minutes after hot work is completed, unless an authorized employer representative determines that no further fire hazard exists following an appropriate inspection.

• Recognize and respond to fires in areas exposed to hot work.

• Attempt to extinguish small, early-stage fires when safe to do so and within the limits of available equipment and training.

• Immediately alert employees to fires that cannot be safely controlled and activate the appropriate alarm or emergency notification system.

• Assist mechanics with production tasks, including handling small mechanical and hand tools, as directed.

• Perform general cleaning and housekeeping duties, including sweeping floors, removing debris, organizing work areas, and keeping walkways clear of obstructions.

• Maintain clean and orderly work areas to help prevent hazards and support safe shipyard operations.

• Properly dispose of trash and work-related debris in designated areas.

• Follow all shipyard safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment

• (PPE).

Qualifications

• Strong commitment to workplace safety and following established procedures.

• Excellent attendance, reliability, and work ethic.

• Ability to remain alert and focused throughout the work shift.

• Leadership potential and the ability to reinforce safe work practices.

• Previous experience in industrial, ship repair, or NAVSEA environments preferred but not required.

• Must be able to obtain and maintain required access credentials for shipyards and naval installations, including DBIDS credentials where applicable.

• Must be physically capable of performing assigned Fire Watch duties.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work around active hot work operations and in industrial shipyard environments.

• Comfort working at heights when required.

• Ability to wear required PPE for extended periods.

• Ability to remain standing or move throughout assigned work areas as needed.

• Ability to respond promptly to hazards and emergency situations.

Work Schedule

• Full-time position.

• Average of 48–56 hours per week.

• Some weekend work may be required.

• Extended hours may be necessary during critical production operations.

• Flexibility, punctuality, and reliability are essential.
