The Tipton Police Department is accepting pre-applications for the position of police officer.
Certified officers in good standing with ILEA Tier 1, or out of state waiver eligibility, wishing to make a lateral transfer are encouraged to apply.
From October 15, 2023 throughout the remainder of the calendar year, pre-applications can be downloaded from the City of Tipton website https://www.tiptongov.com/egov/documents/1696460771_0522.pdf. Pre-applications can also be picked up in-person at the Tipton Police Department, which is located at 225 E. Jefferson Street Tipton, Indiana 46072.
Completed pre-applications can either be emailed to policecontact@tipton.in.gov, or turned in at the Tipton Police Department via US Mail or in-person as soon as possible.
The physical agility testing dates, times, and locations will be announced at a later time. ILEA’s entry standards will be used for TPD testing and those standards can be found here https://www.in.gov/ilea/physical-fitness-standards/.
The comprehensive written testing will be held on on the same day as the physical agility testing. Again - dates, times, and locations will be announced at a later time. Applicants successfully completing the physical testing will be eligible to participate in the written testing.
Applicants successfully completing both physical and written testing will be provided with a full application. Completed full applications and all required documentation needs to be turned in at the Tipton Police Department via US Mail or in-person upon completion.
The Tipton Police Department consists of fifteen police officer positions and the City of Tipton population is in excess of 5,000. The budget for 2024 includes a starting annual salary of $52,311 for a Probationary Officer (year one). Upon completion of the probationary period, a Second Class Officer (years two and three) earns an annual salary $56,207. Starting on year four, a First Class Officer earns an annual salary of $58,433. Longevity pay, up to $5,000, is paid to officers annually for continued years of service.
Basic eligibility requirements include:
1. Shall possess a valid Indiana driver's license (or obtain one within 60 days of becoming an Indiana resident) and have no more than eight active points.
2. Shall be a U.S. citizen.
3. Shall be at least 21 years of age, and must be less than 40 years of age by date of appointment. Age requirements are set by Indiana statute for 1977 PERF agencies.
4. Shall be drug free, and have no convictions for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs.
5. Shall not have a conviction for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, or operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or above.
6. Shall have no felony convictions.
7. Shall not have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
8. Shall not have been dishonorably discharged from the military.
9. Shall be a high school graduate or possess a GED certificate.
10. Shall not have used an illegal drug in the last three years.
11. Shall have vision correctable to 20/50.
12. Shall live in Tipton County OR an adjoining county to Tipton County and within a thirty (30) mile radius of the City of Tipton boundary.
Applicants with a current ILEA Tier 1 certification or out-of-state applicants that will qualify for an ILEA waiver will be excused from any physical or written testing portions in the hiring process.
A certified lateral officer, selected for the police officer position within the Tipton Police Department, will be eligible to receive a one-time five thousand dollar ($5,000) lateral transfer award. This monetary incentive is payable to the lateral officer within thirty (30) days of employment. A certified lateral officer’s years of service, up to ten years, will transfer to the Tipton Police Department in terms of longevity pay and vacation time.
