Responsibilities
- Assist classroom teachers in implementing lesson plans aligned with curriculum standards, including literacy, math, and early childhood education strategies such as Montessori methods.
- Provide physical assistance and behavioral support to students with disabilities, including those on the autism spectrum or with developmental disabilities.
- Support classroom management by encouraging positive behavior and implementing behavior management techniques tailored to individual student needs.
- Facilitate communication using American Sign Language (ASL) when appropriate, ensuring effective interaction with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Collaborate with other professionals—such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, and counselors—to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) that meet each student's unique requirements.
- Assist in creating a safe and nurturing environment by managing classroom routines, supporting childcare activities, and providing toddler care when necessary.
- Support curriculum development efforts by helping prepare instructional materials and engaging students in literacy education, basic math skills, and social-emotional learning activities.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information in compliance with privacy laws and school policies.
Skills
- Experience working with children in early childhood education settings or special education classrooms.
- Strong understanding of childhood development principles and classroom management techniques.
- Knowledge of behavior management strategies for students with behavioral disorders or special needs.
- Familiarity with autism spectrum disorders support strategies and deaf education practices.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is highly desirable.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, therapists, parents, and other staff members for comprehensive student support.
- Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal—to clearly document progress and communicate with diverse stakeholders.
- Experience working within the framework of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) to promote equitable educational opportunities.
- Ability to provide physical assistance for students requiring mobility or sensory support.
- Background in classroom support roles such as childcare or Montessori environments is a plus.
