Summary

The Research & Development Engineer will work out of our Wallingford, CT location but will support product development activities company wide. The R&D Engineer should be a self-motivated engineering professional with an insatiable curiosity about mechanics, electronics, physics, chemistry, metallurgy, materials, etc.

This position serves as an essential resource and subject matter expert in the continuous improvement and development of new coaxial products for commercial, military, and aerospace applications. This person actively manages the new material development process and plays a vital role in driving hardware development from concept, to prototype and ultimately into production.

Apply materials knowledge of metallurgy, materials, ceramics and basic RF / microwave principles to lead the development efforts of innovative new products employed in some of the most challenging applications and environments in the world.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Effectively and accurately review documents and correspondence relating to customer requirements and translate into new designs, material purchasing specifications, and standard manufacturing instructions.
• Validate new and existing materials for impact to electrical, mechanical, and environmental cable performance.
• Maintain and control thorough and accurate documentation for designs and processes.
• Create procedures and provide training and coaching to other technical and manufacturing employees.
• Evaluate, select and specify materials used in the design of high-performance coaxial RF and Microwave components
• Make mechanical and electrical design calculations for tensile, torque, crush, vapor sealing, loss, phase, VSWR and other critical design attributes using established engineering practices.
• Develop and test prototypes and / or perform RF simulations and analysis to optimize designs prior to release.
• Research new materials and processes as required to support adverse environments and other exotic applications.
• Work with suppliers and internal partners to assure / improve manufacturability of new designs.
• Work closely with sales and applications engineering on new products and new markets by assisting with ideas and converting ideas into workable designs.
• Provide design solutions while being mindful of form, fit, function, manufacturability, and cost.
• Research relevant component and technical resources in support of project objectives. Constantly seek to improve design capabilities through study, reading, observation, and evaluation.
