CNC Machine Operator

Job Summary

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining the CNC machines to produce wood products. The operator will review the project through the simulator, and/or blueprints and will perform adjustments, calibration to ensure the quality of products to be produced, safety, and troubleshoot issues when they arise. The CNC operator ensures that production deadlines are met while adhering to safety and quality protocols.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Set-Up

• The operator will review the simulation, blueprints, drawings, and/or other quality documents in preparation for operating the machine. The operator ensures proper calibration of the machine, tools/bits, and/or other attachments needed for operations.

• The operator will verify and inspect the material before operation to ensure quality standards and the correct size and type of product to be cut.

• The operator ensures all safety protocols are in operation (light curtain, machine guarding, interlocks, etc.).

Operations and Maintenance

• The operator will monitor the machine during production, adjusting settings, or replacing tools as necessary to maintain accuracy and quality.

• The operator will provide a first article of inspection as per the drawings. This in-process inspection will be performed by using calibrated measuring devices. The operator ensures the produced parts meet quality and safety standards before it is moved to the next process.

• The operator will perform routine maintenance and preventive maintenance as per the maintenance program for the machine. The operator may diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, operational, or programming issues with the machine.

Safety and Quality

• The operator must understand and follow all applicable safety programs such as but not limited to Lockout/Tagout, Forklift Safety, Hazard Communication, Bloodborne Pathogens, Emergency Action Program and must wear the appropriate personal protective equipment/clothing.

• Keep the area and machine clean and organized as per the owner's instructions.

• The operator must follow all applicable procedures, work instructions, forms, and quality documentation. Maintain accurate records of machine setup, production/issues, metrics, continuous improvements, and operational efficiencies.

Qualifications

• The operator should be familiar with CNC machinery and/or processing equipment. Understanding the cause/effects of operating machines and be able to troubleshoot and resolve machine and process issues.

• The operator must have problem solving techniques and critical thinking skills.

• The operator must have knowledge of verification and quality inspection techniques by being proficient in operating micrometers, calipers, tape measures, and other inspection methods.

• The operator must be able to read drawings, blueprints, and/or technical specifications.

• The operator must have knowledge and the ability to operate an industrial forklift and/or powered hand/table tools.

• The operator must have basic computer knowledge/skills for machine programming and/or data analysis/entry for operational efficiencies.

• Be able to complete basis mathematical calculations such as tolerance levels, fractions, speeds and feeds.

• The operator must demonstrate the ability to follow instructions, be able to multi-task, effective communication skills, and collaborate with team members.

Physical Demands/Requirements:

• Must be able to stand, walk, bend, lift, and carry materials up to 50 lbs regularly.

• Requires the use of hands, tools, and equipment in an active production or construction environment.

• Must be able to climb, reach overhead, and operate machinery as needed.
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) required, including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and hard hat as appropriate.
