Duties
- Perform advanced tree pruning, trimming, and removals in accordance with ANSI A300 standards and industry best practices
- Expertly and confidently climb and work in trees of all sizes—from small ornamentals to large, complex canopy trees—using rope-and-saddle systems, SRT/DRT techniques, and aerial rescue readinessExecute complex rigging operations, including negative rigging and controlled dismantling of hazardous or structurally compromised trees
- Safely operate and maintain chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, and other arboricultural equipment
- Operate bucket trucks and aerial lifts when appropriate, with a strong understanding of when climbing is the safer or more effective option
- Assess tree structure, identify defects, and make real-time decisions to ensure crew safety and property protection
- Apply advanced arboricultural knowledge to diagnose tree health issues, pests, and diseases, and recommend treatment or mitigation plans
- Maintain detailed job documentation, including work performed, site conditions, and safety considerations
- Collaborate effectively with crew members on residential and commercial projects, contributing to efficient workflow and high-quality outcomes
Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum of 3 years of professional tree climbing experience in production arboriculture
- Demonstrated proficiency in rope-and-saddle climbing systems, including SRT and DRT techniques, with the ability to work safely and efficiently in trees of all sizes and complexity
- Strong working knowledge of advanced rigging techniques, including negative rigging and controlled dismantling for safe tree removal
- Experience performing pruning and removals in accordance with ANSI A300 standards and industry safety protocols (ANSI Z133)
- Proven ability to assess tree structure, identify defects, and make sound decisions regarding safe work positioning and removal strategy
- Proficiency in the safe operation and maintenance of arboricultural equipment, including chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, and aerial lifts
- Experience operating bucket trucks and understanding when aerial access vs. climbing is most appropriate
- Solid understanding of tree biology, health diagnostics, and proper pruning practices
- ISA Certification or equivalent is preferred but not required; willingness to obtain certifications and continue professional development is expected
Preferred Qualifications:
- ISA Certified Arborist or related credentials
- Familiarity with large tree rigging and lift-assisted removals
- Knowledge of tree biology, pest/disease ID, and proper pruning techniques
