Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Academic Coordinator to join our educational team at Tillie's Touch. This vital role helps ensure that youth participants receive the individualized academic support, encouragement, resources, and accountability needed to succeed both in school and in life.
Working closely with students, families, tutors, volunteers, coaches, schools, and Tillie’s Touch leadership, the coordinator develops and runs academic programming that complements the organization’s youth soccer and mentoring programs.
Tillie’s Touch believes access to sports can open doors to much more. The organization combines athletic opportunities with academic support and resources designed to help young people build confidence and achieve academic success.
Responsibilities
Academic Programming & Student Support
- Oversee academic programming for Tillie’s Touch youth participants.
- Assess individual student needs and coordinate appropriate academic support and learning plans.
- Provide or coordinate tutoring in areas such as literacy/ELA, mathematics, homework support, Regents preparation, and other identified academic needs.
- Establish academic goals with students and monitor progress throughout the school year.
- Identify students who may need additional intervention or resources and work with families and appropriate partners to develop a plan for support.
- Help reinforce the connection between academic responsibility and participation in Tillie’s Touch programs.
Tutor & Volunteer Management
- Recruit, onboard, train, schedule, and supervise college students, high school students, adult tutors, and academic volunteers.
- Match tutors with students based on academic needs, age, subject matter, and availability.
- Provide tutors with guidance, resources, expectations, and ongoing coaching.
- Maintain appropriate tutor-to-student coverage for scheduled academic programming.
- Create a positive environment where tutors serve not only as academic resources but also as encouraging role models and mentors.
Program Development
- Develop and improve academic initiatives based on student and organizational needs.
- Coordinate seasonal and summer academic programming.
- Support literacy initiatives such as the Tillie’s Touch Soccer Book Worm Club, which combines soccer programming with literacy development.
- Develop curriculum, schedules, activities, and instructional resources as needed.
- Help identify opportunities to expand academic programming while maintaining program quality.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in education, youth development, social work, counseling, nonprofit management, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
- Experience working with school-age youth.
- Experience providing or coordinating tutoring, academic intervention, mentoring, or educational programming.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills.
- Ability to recruit, supervise, and support tutors and volunteers.
- Ability to build positive relationships with young people from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable tracking student information and program outcomes.
- Ability to work collaboratively with families, schools, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
- Commitment to creating a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and encouraging environment for young people.
We are looking for someone who believes in kids, someone who can recognize where a student is struggling while also seeing what that young person is capable of becoming.
This person should be organized enough to manage tutors, schedules, learning plans and data, but warm and flexible enough to build genuine relationships with young people and families.
Tillie’s Touch began by helping remove barriers that prevented children from participating in sports and has grown to include academic support, school resources, mentoring and youth development. Its Hall of Fame already includes former participants who have gone on to college, careers and community involvement, with alumni specifically crediting the organization with helping them stay focused academically and providing mentors.
The Academic Coordinator helps make sure the opportunity that begins on the soccer field continues in the classroom—and beyond.
Pay: $23.00 - $30.00 per hour
Expected hours: 10.0 – 20.0 per week
