Position Overview
The Assistant Department Manager, Shipping & Yard Operations is responsible for supporting the daily execution of outbound shipping and yard activities within the warehouse. This role ensures the efficient movement of shipments, coordination of trailers, and alignment between warehouse operations and transportation.
This position works closely with the Department Manager to maintain shipping accuracy, ensure timely departures, and support team performance while upholding safety, efficiency, and customer expectations.
Supervisory responsibilities
- This position will directly supervise shipping associates, and yard personnel.
- Manage and supervise daily shipping and yard activities, including staging, loading, and outbound shipment processing.
- Coordinate trailer movement, dock assignments, and yard organization to support efficient operations.
- Ensure timely loading and departure of shipments to meet delivery schedules.
- Work with carriers, drivers, and internal teams to ensure shipments are delivered accurately and on time.
- Monitor and update shipment progress within internal systems and communicate status as needed.
- Ensure accuracy of shipping documentation, including bills of lading, packing lists, and related records.
- Investigate and resolve issues related to shipment delays, damages, or discrepancies.
- Support inventory accuracy within shipping areas and ensure proper handling of goods.
- Assist in developing and implementing improvements to shipping and yard processes to increase efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, company policies, and yard safety procedures.
- Support the training and development of team members and reinforce proper processes and expectations.
- Monitor employee performance and ensure adherence to productivity, attendance, and safety standards.
- Ensure the correct supplies and materials are available to support shipping operations.
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of shipping docks and yard areas.
- Provide excellent service to internal and external customers.
- All other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule; including early mornings and late nights as required.
- Partner and establish strong working relationships with other departments that provide support to the overall operation.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and direct a team.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze data and make informed decisions.
- Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of OSHA Standards and regulations.
- At least 2 years of experience in warehouse operations, including shipping and receiving, inventory management, and personnel management.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
- SAP experience preferred.
- WMS experience preferred.
- PIT experience preferred.
- Associate’s degree preferred.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Limited periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Standing and walking most of the time throughout the department and warehouse.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times; seldom required to lift up to 75 lbs.
- Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the facilities.
- Must be able to access all parts of the company equipment.
