Tierra Right of Way Services is seeking experienced Natural Resources Environmental Monitors to join our team for a dedicated project located along the U.S./Mexico International Border in near El Centro, California.  

 

The project is a full-time, up to 2-year long opportunity that consists of providing daily environmental field notes and photographs focusing on construction activity compliance with project best management practices, and collecting project-related data supporting surveys for listed species and preconstruction clearances. 

 

Candidates shall be motivated, self-starters, safety-oriented, and have previous experience working as a natural resources monitor in the southwest desert and be familiar with documenting detailed environmental and project information in electronic format.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. 

 

Essential Functions and Requirements:

  • Candidates must be on-site daily and take daily environmental field notes and photographs using project best management practices; 
  • Collect project-related data, including supporting surveys for listed species; surveying out in front of construction; 
  • Document potential environmental best management practices non-compliance and reporting to Tierra Right of Way Services leadership; 
  • Conduct pre-construction surveys for nesting birds, state and federally listed plants and wildlife, as needed.

  • Effectively communicate with personnel working on the project, including but not limited to, government and construction personnel, colleagues, regulatory agencies, stakeholders, and others.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to be in the field every weekday for an extended period with breaks from alternate staff.
    • Ability to multitask, maintain flexibility, travel, and work independently as well as with supervision.
  • Familiarity with taxonomy and plant identification in the southwest desert.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality 
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact and collaborate with all levels of management and staff
  • Ability to work as a team player
  • Attention to organization, detail and accuracy
  • Ability to maintain regular attendance and be punctual. 
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work
  • Experience driving off road and with a 4x4
  • Experience with Field Maps and Survey 123 or similar data collection software
  • Experience with email, MS Office Suite

Individuals hired must have the ability to walk up to several miles per day, ability to carry water, personal supplies, and PPE.

Travel:

This position requires frequent overnight travel and extended stays. 

 

Work Environment:

This position requires work in remote areas and frequent exposure to outdoor elements, wildlife, rough terrain, and extreme temperatures. 

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological, environmental sciences or related field.
  • Previous environmental monitoring experience in and around active construction.
  • Project experience in the Southwest border region within the field of environmental compliance, biological and/or natural resources.
  • Effective written/verbal communication and organization/analytical skills; experience recording/writing detailed technical data and reports.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and have a reliable form of transportation.
  • Ability to pass a government background check and drug test if required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

•     Master’s degree in biological, environmental sciences or related field.

  • Two years of project experience supporting Government projects in the Southwest border region within the field of environmental compliance, biological and/or natural resources.
  • Detail-oriented with mechanical aptitude and hands-on troubleshooting/problem-solving skills.
