This role is responsible for overseeing molding processes, troubleshooting technical issues, supporting production employees, training team members, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. The Technical Supervisor will work directly on the manufacturing floor while leading daily operations and ensuring all quality, safety, and production standards are met.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Supervise and support daily molding department operations on the manufacturing floor.
- Serve as the technical expert regarding injection molding processes, mold setup, material handling, auxiliary equipment, and work cell management.
- Establish and maintain robust molding processes that consistently produce quality parts at optimal cycle times.
- Troubleshoot molding, machine, mold, material, and auxiliary equipment issues.
- Sample and establish processes for new jobs and new tooling.
- Monitor press utilization, cycle times, downtime, scrap, and mold change times to ensure manufacturing efficiency.
- Ensure all jobs meet or exceed KPI goals and production standards.
- Assist with scheduling priorities and ensure manufacturing goals are achieved.
- Train and mentor Process Technicians, Mold Setters, Material Handlers, and production employees on proper processing and setup methods.
- Provide leadership, direction, and support to employees on the manufacturing floor.
- Assist with employee coaching, accountability, and performance development.
- Ensure adherence to safety procedures, lock out/tag out requirements, housekeeping standards, and company policies.
- Support IATF standards, audits, and process documentation requirements.
- Submit first-piece and last-piece approvals to Quality when required.
- Enter and maintain work orders, production notes, scrap reports, and process documentation within company systems.
- Ensure machines are running to the correct work orders and manufacturing standards.
- Continually review processes and identify opportunities for continuous improvement and cost savings.
- Work closely with Quality, Maintenance, Engineering, and Production teams to resolve manufacturing concerns.
- Assist with plant startup and shutdown activities when needed.
- Lead by example and promote teamwork throughout the department.
- Minimum 3–5 years of injection molding processing experience required.
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
- Strong knowledge of injection molding machines, molds, auxiliary equipment, robotics, and processing parameters.
- Ability to troubleshoot molding defects and determine machine, mold, or process-related issues.
- Experience establishing molding processes for new and existing programs.
- Knowledge of plastic resins and processing characteristics.
- Ability to read schedules, prioritize work, and manage multiple responsibilities.
- Mechanically inclined with the ability to use hand tools and manufacturing equipment.
- Forklift certification or ability to obtain certification.
- Basic computer and data entry skills.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Team-oriented with the ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to push/pull heavy equipment using proper equipment.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during shifts.
- Ability to safely work around manufacturing equipment and machinery.
