The salary range for this position is $3,927.00 - $4,866.00 monthly.

Thurston County Public Works is recruiting for two (2) Flagger/Laborers to join our dynamic, energetic, and innovative Road Operations team. The successful candidate will perform traffic control within work sites for maintenance and construction projects. Flagger/Laborers operate assigned equipment and perform other general labor duties.

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Controls traffic by flagging to guide traffic through work areas and explains to public in a courteous and professional manner the reasons for the job being performed.
  • Exercises good safety procedures and practices.
  • Drives vehicles up to one ton and operates a variety of equipment including, but not limited to:
    • Weed eater
    • Airless sprayer
    • PM (Button) applicator
    • Propane torch
    • Portable compactor
    • Hand tools
    • Portable brush cleaner
    • Pressure washer
  • Performs manual labor, including heavy lifting and shoveling.
  • Assists crews with vegetation, drainage, traffic, new sign and base installation, and surfacing.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Environment - Will perform the majority of duties outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Physical effort is required due to heavy lifting, potentially in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Schedule - A regular full-time workweek shall normally consist of forty (40) hours within a seven (7) day period. The schedule may consist of eight (8), nine (9), or ten (10) hours of actual time worked or compensated per a twenty-four (24) hour period. Other schedules may be established with notice.
  • Travel Requirements - Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings or trainings. Travel to worksites may be required.
  • Customer Interactions - Daily interactions with Thurston County staff and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One year of construction related experience.
  • Must have valid Washington State Driver's License.
  • Must possess a Washington Traffic Flagging Card or obtain one within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must hold a valid First Aid Card (or obtain within 3 months of employment).
  • Any demonstrated combination of experience, training and education which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform labor intensive tasks for extended periods under unfavorable weather conditions and safely operate tools and equipment.
  • Experience in roadway maintenance, highway or building construction that directly involves the skills required to operate machinery, small tools, power tools, vehicles or equipment.

DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Able to work varying schedules and will work overtime as needed.
  • Works cooperatively with other crew members.
  • Able to read and interpret written instructions and documents.
  • Follows oral instructions.
  • Able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Able to do heavy lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
