The Financial Operations Assistant performs technical, complex, and specialized financial, accounting, and fiscal services for the Thurston County Sheriff's Office. Responsibilities include posting complex financial data to general ledgers; assisting in the development and implementation of internal control systems; performing specialized payroll according to contracts, process and audit accounts payable, accounts receivable, travel and training employee reimbursements; maintaining encumbrances, inmate medical billing, support and provide information for budget preparation; reconciling and auditing bank accounts; performing cash handling; and monitoring and administering the inmate accounting system. May serve as a backup to the Accounting Manager and act in a lead capacity to volunteers and temporary/extra help staff.
Financial Operations Assistants may be assigned to one of the following assignments:
- Payroll
- Accounts Payable & Assets/Inventory
- Inmate Medical Support
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.
- Pursuant to RCW 41.14.100, must be a US citizen, lawful permanent resident, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient and be able to speak, read, and write the English language.
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
- One year of college level accounting course work and two years of accounting work experience. Experience may substitute for education, and education for experience on a year-for-year basis.
- Acceptable scores on Civil Service skills examinations.
- Must meet Thurston County Civil Service Pre-Employment Screening Standards .
- Must meet the Sheriff's Office Employment Standards and be willing to submit to and pass a thorough background investigation to include a polygraph examination and psychological evaluation.

- Ability to use a personal computer and related software packages to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing.
- Must handle cash and checks with accountability and integrity.
