PURPOSE
Works with youth patrons and parents/guardians. Plans, manages, and implements special programs for children in the community. Maintains smooth flow of service in Youth Department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Greets visitors in a polite and friendly manner.
- Manages the daily operation of the Youth Department, including setting workflow priorities, insuring that work meets standards, and evaluating activities.
- Oversees and participates in the planning, organization and implementation of a variety of programs for children and parents which encourage use of library materials and facilities.
- Creates monthly Youth Department calendar and other marketing materials.
- Maintains awareness of current youth trends and issues addressed in library field and popular publications, blogs, and listservs.
- Has primary responsibility for programs for children and teens; assists with storytimes for younger children.
- Coordinates seasonal family programming.
- Oversees and coordinates the selection and acquisition of all library materials, donated or purchased, for children and their families.
- Serves as advisor to the library's Teen Advisory Group (TAG).
- Manages the local Dolly Parton Imagination Library mailing list.
- Has primary responsibility for organization of Youth Department collection.
- Communicates with teachers, parents, and community groups to develop and offer youth-focused services, programs, and collections.
- Recommends library policies and procedures to the Director and implements those that are approved.
- Assists in managing the "town sign" display and calendar.
- Oversees installation of displays and seasonal decor in the Youth Department.
- Participates in the ongoing implementation and evaluation of the library's Strategic Plan.
- Assists in resolving complex issues regarding patron accounts.
- Performs duties of Cataloger for the Youth Department.
- May: apply for grants to help fund youth programs/projects; represent the library at community events; provide outreach programming for groups such as the Arc of Greater Boone County and WAVE; assist in collection maintenance, including repairing damaged books.
- Completes responsibilities in a timely manner.
- Abides by Library Board and Evergreen Indiana policies.
- Maintains confidentiality of all patron information.
- Performs additional duties as requested by the Director.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises staff working in the Youth Department. Is responsible for the overall direction and coordination of the Youth Department.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED with five years of library experience or 9 semester hours of required library science courses. Must be able to attain and maintain Librarian Certificate 6. Prefer knowledge of and/or prior experience in the following areas: customer service; planning services including programs for children and parents; developing, interpreting, and implementing policies; progressively more responsible library experience; proven success in use of leadership skills; team development.
DRIVERS LICENSE REQUIRED
Must have current Indiana Passenger Car Driver's License or personal transportation available for job- related assignments, e.g., visiting local schools for program presentations; off-site workshop attendance.
COMMUNICATION/INTERPERSONAL SKILL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicable abilities, aptitudes and personality include: effective problem resolution; enjoys working with children and their families; friendly and helpful; good judgement; promote the library in a positive manner through interactions with patrons and visitors; manage resources effectively and responsibly; readily adapt to change; team player; successful communication with a variety of personalities; team player; and ability to speak and read English. Maintains good personal hygiene and presents a neat, clean, and tasteful appearance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Work involves frequent use of computer terminal.
2. Requires light physical effort such as stooping and bending, and occasional lifting of lightweight objects (up to 25 lbs). May occasionally require lifting of heavier objects (up to 50 lbs).
SCHEDULE
40 hours per week, weekdays, Saturdays, daytime, evening.
