Highway Maintenance Laborer

Position Title: Highway Maintenance Laborer (Part-Time)
Department: Highway Department
Reports To: Highway Commissioner / Highway Supervisor

Position Summary

The Highway Maintenance Laborer performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and improvement of Township roads, right-of-ways, and public infrastructure. The position involves operating light and heavy equipment, performing seasonal maintenance duties, and assisting with public works and storm response operations as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist in maintaining, repairing, and resurfacing Township roads, curbs, ditches, and sidewalks.
• Operate and maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment such as trucks, mowers, plows, salt spreaders, and small power tools.
• Perform snow and ice removal during winter operations, including salting, plowing, and shoveling.
• Clear and maintain drainage systems, culverts, and stormwater ditches.
• Load and unload materials, debris, and equipment as needed.
• Maintain Township grounds, signage, and right-of-way vegetation.
• Assist in setting up and takedown of traffic control devices and safety barriers.
• Participate in cleanup following storms, accidents, or emergency events.
• Follow all Township safety policies and procedures; wear appropriate protective gear.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Highway Supervisor or Commissioner.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
• Previous experience in construction, road maintenance, or equipment operation preferred.
• Valid Illinois driver’s license; CDL preferred or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of basic construction and road maintenance practices.
• Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and light to heavy machinery safely.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
• Strong attention to safety and adherence to Township policies.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Exposure to noise, dust, and hazardous materials is possible.
• May require evening, weekend, or emergency response work (especially during snow or storm events).
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and perform manual labor for extended periods.

Compensation and Benefits

• Hourly rate commensurate with experience and Township pay scale.
• Eligible for Township benefits including health, dental, vision, IMRF retirement, and paid leave.
