  • $19.22-$20.61/hour based on experience

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Generations Childcare Lead Teacher

REPORTS TO: Generations Childcare Supervisor 

JOB SUMMARY:

The Lead Teacher assists with leadership and direction for Generations Childcare, an on-site service provided to staff members. The program is open to children between the ages of 6 weeks old to 5 years old. The Lead Teacher works alongside the Generations Childcare Supervisor to assist with development of childcare services and lesson plans, child supervision and other essential childcare functions. The program is open 6:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday – Friday.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ensure that each family receives an opportunity to build strong relationships with teaching staff by maintaining ongoing, open communication with all families.
  2. Collaborate with children's families to ensure a smooth transition from home to the childcare setting.
  3. Follow all procedures, policies, and licensing standards.
  4. Provide a classroom environment that encourages participation of all children.
  5. Plan periodical parent conferences to discuss children's developmental progress, needs and interests.
  6. Create and carry out weekly plans and implement an age-appropriate curriculum that nurtures and stimulates all domains of each child's development.
  7. Provide a developmentally appropriate classroom environment that reflects diversity and inclusion while working on children's learning and growth.
  8. Perform ongoing developmental evaluations of children as required.
  9. Able to maintain a professional self-image and project the values of the organization.
  10. Demonstrable record of making decisions on behalf of children with their well-being the top priority.

 

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND EDUCATION REQUIRED: 

A lead teacher shall meet one of the following options outlined below to qualify for the position under Michigan licensing regulations: 

Option 1

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience. 
  • 3 hours of MiRegistry approved training in each of the following areas: 
    • Program management
    • Observation, documentation, and assessment
    • Teaching and learning
  • 6 hours of MiRegistry approved training in any of the following areas: 
    • Interactions and guidance
    • Challenging behaviors
    • Trauma informed practices
  • Works in a center that participates in Great Start to Quality. 

Option 2

  • A minimum of 6 months of experience. 
  • 6 semester hours, 9 CEUs, or a combination to equal 90 clock hours of coursework in: 
    • Child care administration
    • Early childhood education
    • Child development
    • A child-related field
      • Up to 30 hours of MiRegistry-approved training may be used to meet these requirements. 
  • Works in a center that participates in Great Start to Quality.

Option 3

  • One of the following:
    • A valid child development associate credential
    • Montessori credential
    • Infant family associate credential
    • Associate degree or higher in any field of study
  • 3 hours of MiRegistry approved training in each of the following areas: 
    • Program management
    • Observation, documentation, and assessment
    • Teaching and learning
  • 6 hours of MiRegistry approved training in any of the following areas: 
    • Interactions and guidance
    • Challenging behaviors
    • Trauma informed practices

In addition the outlined criteria above, the following criteria must also be met:

  1. Must be 19 years of age
  2. Have a High school Diploma or GED
  3. Two years of teaching experience preferred
  4. Typical requirements before working directly with the children include completion of: Child Abuse Prevention for staff, Mandated Reporter training; Shaken Baby Syndrome; Sudden Infant Death Syndrome; CPR; First Aid; AED; Bloodborne Pathogens; complete a Tuberculosis test and a physical and provide documentation of all.
  5. Fulfillment of state-specific hiring standards, pass the criminal history background and fingerprinting process, and completion of Thornapple Manor program specific certifications. 
  6. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

WORK ENVIRONMENT, PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND EXPECTATIONS:

  • Ability to work alongside the Generations Childcare Supervisor.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Strong knowledge of childcare programs.
  • Be comfortable with computers and learning new software.
  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to safely supervise children’s activities. Such as: be able to kneel, squat, lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Be available as early as 5:45 am and as late as 6:15 pm.
