Mechanical Engineer (USCG/Navy)

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer to support marine engineering efforts for the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, and commercial shipbuilding efforts in Arlington, VA. An ideal candidate will have prior experience with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations.

Typical Responsibilities

  • Design and analyze mechanical systems for ships, including propulsion, piping, HVAC, and machinery arrangements.
  • Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with naval architects, structural engineers, and production teams to ensure integration of systems.
  • Perform calculations related to fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and machinery performance.
  • Support installation, testing, and commissioning of mechanical systems on board vessels.
  • Conduct failure analysis, troubleshooting, and recommend design improvements.
  • Participate in design reviews, supplier evaluations, and quality assurance processes.

Location: Primarily onsite at THOR office in Arlington/Shirlington, VA.

Travel: Up to 10% travel is anticipated.

Typical Physical Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.

Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $80,000 – 120,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience.

Eligibility for a SECRET Security Clearance is Required: This position requires eligibility for a Secret security clearance, to be obtained after hire. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance; therefore, only current U.S. citizens will be considered for this position.

Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or another relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • At least three (3) to five (5) years of progressive experience in naval architecture.
  • Experience with computer applications relating to shipboard mechanical systems
  • Familiarity with USN, USCG, IACS and/or commercial ship design rules and regulations.
  • Proficient with common productivity software.
  • Strong communications skills.

Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Ideal experience will have been obtained in U.S. Federal or commercial ship or boat building acquisition programs.
  • Experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs.
  • Experience with Pipeflo
