Job Summary:

The Fire Extinguisher Shop Technician remains responsible for high-volume disassembling, inspecting, hydrostatic testing, repairing, and recharging various types of fire extinguishers and cylinders. The role works closely with Fire System Service Technicians, Operations Managers, as well as other team members to ensure the central service facility runs effectively, as well as aligns with company safety and quality standards.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Evaluate incoming cylinders to determine necessary service, assessing for signs of corrosion, physical damage, or mechanical defects.
  • Safely operate specialized shop equipment to empty, clean, and refill dry chemical, CO2, and clean-agent extinguishers.
  • Perform low- and high-pressure hydrostatic testing on cylinders to verify structural integrity according to NFPA and DOT regulations.
  • Disassemble valve assemblies, replace internal components (O-rings, valve stems, pressure gauges), and reassemble units to factory specifications.
  • Identify and permanently decommission cylinders that fail safety or pressure standards, following strict safety disposal protocols.
  • Monitor shop supply levels of chemical agents, nitrogen, CO2, and replacement parts. Maintain and calibrate shop tools and testing equipment.
  • Accurately log cylinder serial numbers, test results, and work completed in our digital inventory or shop tracking system.
  • May operate a forklift and/or pallet jack to receive shipments. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Experience & Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • One (01) to two (02) years of experience in fire protection service, mechanical assembly, or warehouse/shop production preferred.
  • Comfort working with air compressors, high-pressure equipment, pneumatic tools, and digital scales.
  • Ability to accurately record gauges, follow precise chemical weight requirements, and maintain logs.
  • Ability to read work orders, follow instructions, and complete documentation accurately.
  • Ability to learn new computer skills, familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, preferred.
  • Obtain National Association of Fire Equipment Distributors (NAFED)/International Code Council (ICC) exam certification, as well as obtain applicable State Fire Marshal license (applicable to Texas and Florida Branches).
  • Complete forklift operator certification.
  • Maintains a valid driver's license and ability to pass a drug screen and background check. 


Physical Requirements:

  • Position will require utilizing a computer, talking on the phone, attending virtual online and in-person meetings, standing/walking and being on your feet for up to 8 hours a day, and the ability to lift, pull and carry equipment and materials up to 50 pounds on a routine basis.
  • Could work in a non-air-conditioned environment.
